(The Conversation) \u2014 Two hundred years ago, on Oct. 26, 1825, New York Gov. DeWitt Clinton boarded a canal boat by the shores of Lake Erie. Amid boisterous festivities, his vessel, the Seneca Chief, embarked from Buffalo, the westernmost port of his brand-new Erie Canal.<\/p>\n

Clinton and his flotilla made their way east to the canal\u2019s terminus in Albany, then down the Hudson River to New York City. This maiden voyage culminated on Nov. 4 with a ceremonial disgorging of barrels full of Lake Erie water into the brine of the Atlantic: pure political theater he called \u201cthe Wedding of the Waters<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n

The Erie Canal, whose bicentennial is being celebrated all month, is an engineering marvel \u2013 a National Historic Monument enshrined in folk song<\/a>. Such was its legacy that as a young politician, Abraham Lincoln<\/a> dreamed of becoming \u201cthe DeWitt Clinton of Illinois.\u201d<\/p>\n

As a historian of the 19th-century frontier<\/a>, I\u2019m fascinated by how civil engineering shaped America \u2013 especially given the country\u2019s struggles to fix its aging infrastructure<\/a> today. The opening of the Erie Canal reached beyond Clinton\u2019s Empire State, cementing the Midwest into the prosperity of the growing nation. This human-made waterway transformed America\u2019s economy and immigration<\/a> while helping fuel a passionate religious revival<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But like most big achievements, getting there wasn\u2019t easy. The nation\u2019s first \u201csuperhighway\u201d was almost dead on arrival. <\/p>\n

Clinton\u2019s folly<\/p>\n

The idea of connecting New York City to the Great Lakes originated in the late 18th century<\/a>. Yet when Clinton pushed to build a canal, the plan was controversial. <\/p>\n

The governor and his supporters secured funding through Congress in 1817, but President James Madison vetoed the bill, considering federal support for a state project unconstitutional. New York turned to state bonds to finance the project, which Madison\u2019s ally Thomas Jefferson had derided as \u201cmadness<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some considered \u201cClinton\u2019s big ditch<\/a>\u201d blasphemy. \u201cIf the Lord had intended there should be internal waterways,\u201d argued Quaker minister Elias Hicks<\/a>, \u201che would have placed them there.\u201d <\/p>\n

Construction began on July 4, 1817<\/a>. Completed eight years later, the canal stretched some 363 miles (584 kilometers), with 18 aqueducts and 83 locks<\/a> to compensate for elevation changes en route. All this was built with only basic tools, pack animals and human muscle \u2013 the latter supplied by some 9,000 laborers, roughly one-quarter of whom<\/a> were recent immigrants from Ireland.<\/p>\n

Boomtowns<\/p>\n

Despite its naysayers, the Erie Canal paid off \u2013 literally. Within a few years<\/a>, shipping rates from Lake Erie to New York City fell from US$100 per ton to under $9. Annual freight on the canal eclipsed trade along the Mississippi River within a few decades, amounting to $200 million \u2013 which would be more than $8 billion today<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Commerce drove industry and immigration, enriching the canal towns<\/a> of New York \u2013 transforming villages like Syracuse and Utica into cities. From 1825-1835, Rochester was the fastest-growing urban center in America.<\/p>\n

By the 1830s, politicians had stopped ridiculing America\u2019s growing canal system. It was making too much money. The hefty $7 million investment in building the Erie Canal had been fully recouped<\/a> in toll fees alone. <\/p>\n

Religious revival<\/p>\n

Nor was its legacy simply economic. Like many Americans during the Industrial Revolution, New Yorkers struggled to find stability, purpose and community. The Erie Canal channeled new ideas and religious movements, including the Second Great Awakening<\/a>: a nationwide movement of Christian evangelism and social reform, partly in reaction to the upheavals of a changing economy. <\/p>\n

Though the movement began at the turn of the century, it flourished in the hinterlands along the Erie Canal, which became known as the \u201cBurned-Over District<\/a>.\u201d Revivalists like Charles Grandison Finney<\/a> \u2013 America\u2019s most famous preacher at the time \u2013 found a lively reception along this \u201cpsychic highway<\/a>,\u201d as one author later dubbed upstate New York.<\/p>\n

Some denominations, like the Methodists<\/a>, grew dramatically. But the \u201cBurned-Over District\u201d also gave birth to new churches after the canal\u2019s creation. Joseph Smith founded the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints<\/a>, often known as Mormons, in Fayette, New York, in 1830. The teachings of William Miller<\/a>, who lived near the Vermont border, spread west along the canal route \u2013 the roots of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.<\/p>\n

Door to the West<\/p>\n

As Clinton predicted, the Erie Canal was \u201ca bond of union<\/a> between the Atlantic and Western States,\u201d uniting upstate New York and the agrarian frontier of the Midwest to the urban markets of the Eastern seaboard. <\/p>\n

In the mid-1820s, Ohio Gov. Ethan Allen Brown praised America\u2019s canals<\/a> \u201cas veins and arteries to the body politic\u201d and commissioned two canals of his own<\/a>: one to link the Ohio River to the Erie Canal, completed in 1832; and another to link the Miami River, completed in 1845. These canals in turn connected to numerous smaller waterways, creating an extensive network of trade and transportation.<\/p>\n

Like New York, Ohio had its canal towns, including Middletown<\/a>: the birthplace of Vice President JD Vance and a city emblematic of America\u2019s shifting industrial fortunes<\/a>. <\/p>\n

While America\u2019s canal boom brought prosperity, this wealth came at a cost to many Indigenous communities<\/a> \u2013 a cost that is only slowly being acknowledged<\/a>. The Haudenosaunee, often known by the name \u201cIroquois,\u201d especially paid the price for the Erie Canal. The confederacy of tribes was pressured into ceding lands to the state of New York, and further displaced by ensuing frontier settlement.<\/p>\n

Past and future<\/p>\n

As the U.S. nears its 250th birthday on July 4, 2026, the official website<\/a> of this commemoration urges Americans \u201cto pause and reflect on our nation\u2019s past \u2026 and look ahead toward the future we want to create for the next generation and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the recent federal government shutdown<\/a> suggests, however, the nation\u2019s political system is struggling. <\/p>\n

Overcoming gridlock demands bipartisan consensus on basic concerns. Technology changes, but the demands of infrastructure \u2013 from rebuilding roads and bridges<\/a> to expanding broadband<\/a> and sustainable energy networks \u2013 and the will needed to address them, persist. As the Erie Canal reminds us, American democracy has always been built upon concrete foundations.<\/p>\n
