The Erie School District\u2019s administrative building was packed with parents, residents and students during a lengthy school board meeting, where community members voiced concerns about school safety and how administrators handled a recent incident involving a teacher and a classroom panic alarm.<\/p>\n
The board opened the meeting by addressing the situation at Jefferson Elementary. Superintendent Dr. Natalyn Gibbs spoke about the incident early in the meeting.<\/p>\n
Superintendent Dr. Natalyn Gibbs also addressed the public, saying in part, \u201cAs I said before, improving the working conditions for our staff directly impacts the learning conditions for our students.\u201d<\/p>\n
Some parents questioned how the administration responded to the situation, while others expressed support for the superintendent and the teachers involved.<\/p>\n
One Jefferson Elementary parent told us they believe the situation has been ongoing.<\/p>\n
Another parent, Jay Breneman \u2014 who also serves as the Erie School Board president and says he has a second-grader at Jefferson \u2014 said incidents like this can occur in any school. He added that moments like this highlight the importance of leadership and communication within the district.<\/p>\n
Breneman said he believes the situation could represent a turning point for the school district.<\/p>\n
During the meeting, the board also discussed the possibility of creating a new position focused on addressing school-related concerns and feedback from parents.
