PHILADELPHIA, PA \u2014 Phillis Fugah, 25, of Upper Darby, was sentenced to ten years and one day in federal prison and five years of supervised release for carjacking and discharging a firearm during a violent crime, U.S. Attorney David Metcalf announced.<\/p>\n
U.S. District Court Judge Timothy J. Savage imposed the sentence after Fugah previously pleaded guilty to one count of carjacking and one count of using, carrying, and discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.<\/p>\n
The charges stem from an August 29, 2024, armed carjacking and shooting on the 7100 block of West Chester Pike in Upper Darby.<\/p>\n
According to court filings, Fugah and a male accomplice approached a Honda Pilot where a man was sitting in the vehicle with his two young children while waiting for his wife.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors said the accomplice opened the passenger-side door but fled the scene.<\/p>\n
Fugah then opened the driver\u2019s side door, entered the vehicle, and pointed a gun at the victim while demanding money, according to court records.<\/p>\n
During the incident, the victim\u2019s five-year-old son exited the vehicle and ran to the sidewalk, authorities said.<\/p>\n
The victim exited the vehicle and attempted to stop Fugah, telling her that his infant child remained inside the SUV.<\/p>\n
During a struggle, Fugah raised the firearm and shot at the victim, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n
The bullet partially shattered the driver\u2019s-side window and struck the victim\u2019s baseball cap, narrowly missing his head.<\/p>\n
Authorities said a bullet fragment also struck the window of an occupied SEPTA bus across the street, passing over the heads of several passengers.<\/p>\n
Fugah then fled in the Honda Pilot with the infant still inside the vehicle, according to prosecutors.<\/p>\n
Police later located the SUV a short distance away, and the child was recovered unharmed.<\/p>\n
The case was investigated by the FBI\u2019s Newtown Square Resident Agency and the Upper Darby Township Police Department.<\/p>\n
Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian Doherty and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Sandra Urban prosecuted the case, according to the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n
