{"id":13792,"date":"2025-10-24T15:52:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-24T15:52:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/13792\/"},"modified":"2025-10-24T15:52:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-24T15:52:08","slug":"democrats-in-upper-darby-accuse-a-gop-council-candidate-of-racist-posts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/13792\/","title":{"rendered":"Democrats in Upper Darby accuse a GOP council candidate of racist posts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Bob Yantorno, a Republican candidate for a seat on <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/upper-darby\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Upper Darby<\/a>\u2019s Township Council, is facing scrutiny over material he posted three years ago that <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/democratic-party\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Democrats<\/a> have decried as racist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Yantorno, 65, is a former commanding officer of the <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/narberth\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Narberth<\/a> Police Department, a former paramedic and a veteran of other law enforcement agencies. He\u2019s running in the township\u2019s 3rd District. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Yantorno denies that anything he\u2019s ever posted was motivated by racism and said his social media comments reflected his outrage over incidents of violence. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The controversy stems from posts Yantorno made in 2022 on Twitter, now known as X, in response to crime news stories from Fox 29 that involved Black suspects. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cTake him out back n bullet in occipital section,\u201d Yantorno wrote about a suspect from <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/drexel-hill\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Drexel Hill<\/a> charged with two homicides. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cArrest convict bury,\u201d Yantorno wrote in response to a booking photo of a Camden man accused of rape. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">In a 2022 reply to an Upper Darby Police Department statement about a rash of thefts from automobiles, Yantorno wrote under four photos of young men in hoodies walking near cars but not stealing anything, \u201cCommon denominator?\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The race of the men was not obvious from the photos posted by the department. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Democrat Noah Fields, 25, who\u2019s running for one of two at-large council seats, neither of which Yantorno is seeking, condemned Yantorno in an interview for what he said was \u201cshocking\u201d and \u201chateful\u201d speech, as well as \u201cviolent rhetoric.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Fields said that \u201cracism has no place in Upper Darby.\u201d He added that \u201cthis guy is calling for the execution of people without due process. The violent rhetoric we\u2019re hearing on the national level is trickling down to local politics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">State Rep. Heather Boyd (D., Delaware), who represents Upper Darby, said the posts were \u201creally upsetting, offensive, and disappointing.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">She added, \u201cWe don\u2019t want anyone in a position of influence to not consider people\u2019s right to due process and the rule of law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Asked about the posts in an interview Wednesday, Yantorno initially said he was unaware of their existence. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cI have no idea what you\u2019re talking about. What Democrats are saying is slanderous. People put stuff out there about me that\u2019s not true,\u201d Yantorno said. \u201cAll I can tell you that in the Narberth Police Department, my reputation was stellar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Yantorno said he didn\u2019t know how posts with his name, photo, and personal details got onto X. His page says he joined the platform in 2022 and features a profile photo of him in police uniform. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">He bristled at being called racist. He added, \u201cI would never put a picture of somebody of any color and disparage them because of their race.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Yantorno said that personal experience has made him sensitive to race bias. He said that when he and his first wife, whom he identified as a woman of color, moved into a house in Stonehurst, an Upper Darby neighborhood, someone stuck a cross in their lawn. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">It was, Yantorno said, a symbol of hatred aimed at his then-wife.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Similarly, he said, when he was a police officer in Yeadon, he and his former wife \u201cfell in love\u201d with a house they wanted to buy, but had to back out of the deal because their real estate agent said if they moved in, \u201csomeone would burn down the house and the real estate office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Yantorno added without being asked, \u201cYou will never see anything from me online using the \u2018N-word.\u2019 That\u2019s not how I roll, brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">A statement emailed Thursday by the Upper Darby Republican Campaign Committee included remarks attributed to Yantorno that differed from his original explanation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">In the new statement, Yantorno no longer said he was unaware of the posts. Instead, he said, \u201cthose comments reflected my frustration and anger over the senseless violence in our community and had nothing to do with race.\u201d He added that \u201cclaims of racism are offensive and absurd.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">A GOP committee statement, which was not attributed to a specific person, emphasized Yantorno\u2019s commitment to public service, and said that he doesn\u2019t deserve a \u201cfabricated inference that has no basis in reality.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Jeff Jones, an Upper Darby real estate developer who has been a Republican candidate for council in the past, defended Yantorno. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cI read the tweets. They were comments made by gentleman 35 years in law environment who\u2019s seen criminals and victims at their worst, and the frustration came through in those tweets,\u201d said Jones, who is Black. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Melissa DiNofia-Bozzone, Yantorno\u2019s Democratic opponent for the 3rd District seat, declined to comment on the posts, saying, \u201cI\u2019m focused on running a positive campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Friends describe Yantorno, a veteran, as a gregarious person with a desire to help his community. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">In 2020, he <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CAc_qI4nMu-\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CAc_qI4nMu-\/\">biked<\/a> across the United States to raise money for families of slain police officers. He also did the ride, he said, for the family of <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/news\/mumia-abu-jamal-appeal-denied-philadelphia-police-daniel-faulkner-20230406.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/news\/mumia-abu-jamal-appeal-denied-philadelphia-police-daniel-faulkner-20230406.html\">Daniel Faulkner<\/a>, the Philadelphia Police officer who was killed in 1981. Mumia Abu-Jamal received the death penalty for the shooting, which was later reduced to a life sentence without parole.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Yantorno is also the author of a 1995<a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.booktopia.com.au\/brutal-mercies-r-e-jr-yantorno\/book\/9781412200554.html?srsltid=AfmBOorOYLqHCAYaql3TrgnO-1y4HqENEg4z-F4DAbzPRvjAr5GCSj7F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.booktopia.com.au\/brutal-mercies-r-e-jr-yantorno\/book\/9781412200554.html?srsltid=AfmBOorOYLqHCAYaql3TrgnO-1y4HqENEg4z-F4DAbzPRvjAr5GCSj7F\"> crime novel <\/a>set in Philadelphia called Brutal Mercies.
