Howard Eskin and Angelo Cataldi had a somewhat adversarial relationship<\/a> during their time as hosts on Philadelphia\u2019s 94 WIP.<\/p>\n

However, the former sports radio hosts have found common ground on one issue: The radio station ain\u2019t what it used to be.<\/p>\n

In what\u2019s become a common refrain in recent days from aging sports talk hosts<\/a>, the two had plenty to say about how the current era of WIP is a far cry from the one they were a part of.<\/p>\n

\u201cI stopped listening,\u201d Cataldi told Eskin on a recent episode of The Howard Eskin Show<\/a>. \u201cI don\u2019t listen at all anymore. The reason is because I would hear something that I would go, well, no, that\u2019s not the way you should do it. I did it for 33 years. I know how to do it. It got to the point where it was just so frustrating for me that I don\u2019t listen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cataldi\u2019s big beef seems to be a shift in tone, away from the tough talk of the Philly sports radio he knew, towards a more nuanced way of discussing things.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople emailed me all the time,\u201d Cataldi said<\/a>. \u201cThe Phillies would lose a big playoff game, and the next day the host would talk about how nobly they fought. That\u2019s not the Philadelphia I was in. When you don\u2019t win here, you should pay a price.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eskin offered a broader critique of the radio industry, saying that it almost doesn\u2019t matter what sports talk hosts say because the entire genre is in decline.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople don\u2019t want to turn the radio on anymore,\u201d Eskin said. \u201cRadio is a dying business. It\u2019s sad because both our careers were great for sports talk radio, but it\u2019s a business that\u2019s almost dead.<\/p>\n

\u201cI found out within the last week that WIP pays a lot of producers $13 an hour. Nothing against McDonald\u2019s, but you can make more money at McDonald\u2019s. The kids want to get into radio, and I understand that, but that\u2019s so unfair to them. Just be fair to him. That\u2019s all. Just be fair.\u201d<\/p>\n

The conversation is a bit awkward for Eskin, as his son, Spike,\u00a0currently hosts the afternoon show on WIP<\/a>, though he\u2019s happy to admit he doesn\u2019t fully appreciate how\u00a0he\u2019s doing it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t talk about it,\u201d Eskin said. \u201cHe\u2019s a smart guy, and he knows what he\u2019s doing. He plays the radio game the way they play it now, which I don\u2019t totally agree with. We don\u2019t discuss it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey have some good people there [94 WIP]. But they don\u2019t have enough good people there, and they\u2019re not alone. Talent doesn\u2019t exist the way it used to in talk radio. It\u2019s just the way it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cataldi retired from WIP in 2023<\/a> following a 33-year run as the morning show host.<\/p>\n

Eskin abruptly left WIP in 2024<\/a> following a 38-year run. That announcement came months after he was\u00a0banned from covering the Phillies<\/a> at Citizens Bank Park, where he was accused of making an unwanted advance toward an Aramark employee.
