Officials in South Jersey are warning everyone to check the status of their pets’ rabies vaccines after a wild raccoon tested positive for the disease following a fight with a dog. <\/p>\n
The wild raccoon and the dog got into a fight near Blue Jay Lane in Mount Holly on Thursday, March 11, 2026, according to the Burlington County Health Department. <\/p>\n
After the raccoon died, health officials said they tested it for rabies and the results came back positive. <\/p>\n
The family of the dog was contacted, officials said. The dog is up to date with its rabies vaccinations and recently got a booster. <\/p>\n
All residents in Burlington County are being urged to check the vaccination status of their pets in light of this incident. <\/p>\n
If you or someone you know has been bitten or scratched by a wild animal within the last month, you are urged to alert your doctor. <\/p>\n
As of March 16, the Burlington County Health Department says that it is not aware of any other humans or pets who have been exposed to the disease. <\/p>\n
