HELLERTOWN, Pa.- A proposal to build a three-story apartment building for senior citizens is coming back in front of Hellertown leaders.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, the borough’s Zoning Hearing Board will hear an appeal from\u00a0developer Abe Atiyeh’s\u00a0Exchange 21 LLC pertaining to 30 Bachman Street.<\/p>\n
Plans call for 43 apartments on the site, which is currently a vacant lot.<\/p>\n
Several variances would need to be granted, including a variance to permit housing for the elderly on a parcel of land that is now included in Hellertown’s\u00a0I-Industrial Zoning District.<\/p>\n
The developer is also seeking variances for the building’s size, parking requirements and\u00a0off-street truck loading space.<\/p>\n
The project previously was discussed by the borough’s planners and council in 2024, when some council members expressed concerns about the impact the new building would have on the surrounding neighborhood.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Also, in 2021, a senior citizen housing project for the site was rejected by the borough. That plan proposed two, four-story buildings with 80 independent living units and 112 total beds.<\/p>\n
