PITTSBURGH, Penn. \u2014 A meteor was caught on camera streaking across the sky in Pittsburgh<\/a> early Tuesday.\u00a0The video was taken by an eagle-eyed employee of the National Weather Service office in Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n

The meteor appeared to cause a loud boom that could be heard across parts of the Ohio Valley, according to the NWS office in Cleveland<\/a>, as it made its fiery journey through the Earth<\/a>‘s atmosphere<\/a>.<\/p>\n

NASA officials said many eyewitnesses in the following states have reported seeing a very bright daylight fireball: Delaware<\/a>, Indiana<\/a>, Illinois<\/a>, Kentucky<\/a>, Maryland<\/a>, Michigan<\/a>, New York<\/a>, Ohio, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The fireball was seen just before 9 a.m. ET. The meteor was initially seen above Lake Erie, and it moved south at 40,000 mph. Nasa<\/a> said the fireball \u2014 caused by a small asteroid nearly six feet in diameter and weighing about seven tons \u2014 traveled over 34 miles through the upper atmosphere before fragmenting 30 miles over Valley City<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The fragments<\/a> continued on to the south, producing meteorites in the vicinity of Medina County, Ohio<\/a>. There were no immediate reports of damage.<\/p>\n

The asteroid unleashes an energy of 250 tons of TNT when it fragmented, resulting in a pressure wave that propagated to the ground, causing the booms and explosive noises heard by many.<\/p>\n

Attention Skywatchers: Look Out For Heightened Meteor Activity<\/a><\/p>\n

NASA said the sound may have even shaken houses north of Medina<\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to NASA, most meteors smaller than a football field break up as they hurtle through the atmosphere<\/a> and generally less than 5% of the original object makes it down to the ground.<\/p>\n

Meteors travel through the sky at tens of thousands of miles per hour \u2014 well above the speed of sound \u2014 their altitude and size dictate whether a sonic boom can be heard on the Earth’s surface.<\/p>\n
