March 21 marks World Down Syndrome Day<\/a> \u2014 a time to raise awareness about the genetic condition caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21, and to celebrate the lives and connections that make every story unique.<\/p>\n In Erie, two of those stories belong to Jason Shea and Erin Carroll.<\/p>\n The longtime friends recently reconnected at Voices for Independence<\/a>, where their bond quickly became something special. Both Jason and Erin have Down syndrome, and both bring an unmistakable energy and warmth to every room they enter.<\/p>\n “Life with Erin is challenging, but amazing,” Michelle Carroll, Erin’s Sister, said with a smile.<\/p>\n Each week, the two come together for a cooking class\u2014an activity that’s about more than just preparing meals. It’s about connection, laughter, and shared experiences.<\/p>\n Their friendship is filled with encouragement and joy, often cheering each other on in the simplest moments. For Erin, that support means everything.<\/p>\n “It feels good to be with Jason,” she said. “Jason makes me feel like I’m beautiful and sweet. He makes me laugh. Being together with him makes me feel good about myself.”<\/p>\n Those close to them say their connection is something truly special.<\/p>\n “They have fun together. They laugh together. They love each other unconditionally. It’s a perfect friendship,” Michelle Carroll shared.<\/p>\n Erin takes pride in her independence and confidence, while Jason is known for his strength, determination, and sense of humor\u2014whether he’s working out at the gym or making people laugh.<\/p>\n “He’s very smart\u2026 very good with technology,” Nancy, Shea, Jason\u2019s mother, said. “He’s always waving to people, holding doors for them.”<\/p>\n For their families, the journey has been filled with unexpected joy and perspective.<\/p>\n “When Jason was born, I thought my life would change for the worse\u2014but it changed so much for the better,” his mother said.<\/p>\n Now, they hope others can see that same light.<\/p>\n “I think you are in for the time of your life,” Nancy Shea said, speaking to other families. “It really is a wonderful experience, and it continues to be every day.”<\/p>\n Jason and Erin are active throughout the Erie community, including with the Barber National Institute<\/a> and local theater programs like McDowell Inspire Plays.
