Could the Steelers try to do something similar to land another receiver, such as Marvin Mims, this offseason?

Steelers Depot’s Alex Kozora argued it’s a possibility if general manager Omar Khan wanted to put in a trade inquiry with the Denver Broncos.

“Last week, Denver made a blockbuster deal to acquire Miami Dolphins‘ wideout Jaylen Waddle. It’s a major move that puts the Broncos in win-now mode,” wrote Kozora.

“Adding Waddle leaves a surplus. Denver might be looking to offload a receiver now buried on the depth chart.”

Kozora then named Mims a potential Steelers target.

The 24-year-old has posted 98 catches, 1,202 receiving yards and eight touchdowns in 48 NFL games. More of his damage, though, has come in the return game.

Mims has made two Pro Bowls as a returner. In 2024, he earned a first-team All-Pro nomination as well. During that campaign, he led the NFL with 15.7 yards per punt return.

Last season, he returned his first punt for a touchdown. Mims also had a kickoff return for a touchdown as a rookie in 2023.

In 2023, he made second-team All-Pro as a returner.

Why the Steelers Could Pursue WR Marvin Mims

With Pittman and D.K. Metcalf, the Pittsburgh receiver room is looking a lot better than it has in recent years. But the Steelers could still use depth, especially with a slot receiver.

The team also has to replace punt returner Calvin Austin III and could use a major upgrade on kickoff returns. The Steelers mostly used running backs on the kickoff return team last season with very little success.

“Since entering the NFL in 2023, Mims ranks second league-wide in punt return average at a healthy 15.6 yards on 74 runbacks with one score,” wrote Kozora.

“He’s less successful as a kick returner, 26th league-wide at 26.6 yards, but that would be a breath of fresh air for a Pittsburgh team struggling to get out of the basement. Mims would come in as the starting kick and punt returner, and after the draft, probably a No. 4 receiver.”

With that comment, Kozora seemed to be suggesting the Steelers both trade for Mims and add a receiver in the draft.

There’s definitely room for two more wideout additions in Pittsburgh before 2026. That would push Roman Wilson and Ben Skowronek down the depth chart, but that’s not a bad thing.

Skowronek is more of a special teams ace, and Wilson hasn’t shown the capacity of being more than a contributor in garbage time.

Last season, Mims played in the slot 30% of the time. He could line up there more with the Steelers, but Pittsburgh could also grab a slot receiver early in the 2026 NFL Draft.

How Much Would Mims Cost in a Trade?

Kozora initially stated it’s difficult to project how much Mims might cost in a trade. But he then presented two scenarios.

First, the Steelers could trade a fifth-round pick for Mims. That would leave Pittsburgh without a pick in that round, but they own two fourth-rounders and two more selections in the sixth this year.

Or a draft pick swap may be enough to acquire Mims. Kozora suggested the Steelers could send No. 99 overall in the third round to Denver for the receiver and the No. 111 pick in the fourth.

The Steelers have three third-round selections in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Khan has more than enough draft capital to acquire Mims. The question is whether he’s available, and how the Steelers potentially see him fitting in with the rookie wideout they want to target in the draft.

Dave Holcomb is a sports reporter covering the NFL and MLB for Heavy.com, with a focus on the Pittsburgh Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions.
