Philadelphia helped invent women\u2019s medicine. But when it comes to women\u2019s health innovation, we\u2019re not leading the market we should own.<\/p>\n

In 1850, Philadelphia opened the Woman\u2019s Medical College of Pennsylvania<\/a>, the world\u2019s first medical school for women. More than 170 years later, while Philadelphia remains a healthcare powerhouse, we\u2019ve ceded women\u2019s health innovation leadership to Boston<\/a> and New York<\/a>. Those cities built dedicated women\u2019s health venture funds and innovation programs, attracting billions in capital.<\/p>\n

Women\u2019s health can\u2019t be treated as a niche. It needs to be recognized as a distinct economic opportunity.<\/p>\n

The result? We\u2019re missing out on one of healthcare\u2019s fastest-growing investment categories in a sector we pioneered.<\/p>\n

If local leaders want life sciences to remain a growth engine, women\u2019s health can\u2019t be treated as a niche. It needs to be recognized as a distinct economic opportunity.<\/p>\n

As CEO of the Science Center Tiffany Wilson recently wrote<\/a>, Philadelphia\u2019s healthcare innovation challenge isn\u2019t a shortage of idealism. It\u2019s closing the \u201cadoption gap\u201d between innovation and implementation. What we\u2019ve lacked is intentional coordination around specific categories where those assets create competitive advantage.<\/p>\n

Women\u2019s health is that opportunity. The sector delivered $2.6 billion in venture capital in 2024 alone<\/a>, up nearly 60% year-over-year. In Boston, this focused leadership has meant hundreds of high-wage jobs, tens of millions in new venture capital<\/a>, an enhanced reputation attracting top talent and strategic acquisitions.<\/p>\n

Boston didn\u2019t become a life sciences capital by accident. Kendall Square<\/a> isn\u2019t just \u201cbiotech.\u201d It\u2019s known for oncology, rare disease and precision medicine \u2014 the result of years of targeted investment and coordination.<\/p>\n

Philadelphia can do the same, starting where our historical legacy and current expertise align.<\/p>\n

Women\u2019s health is bigger than most people realize<\/p>\n

When most people hear \u201cwomen\u2019s health,\u201d they think exclusively of reproductive care.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A groundbreaking analysis of 272 women\u2019s health transactions from 2000 to 2024 reveals the category is far larger<\/a>: over $100 billion in exit value to date, with diagnostics, oncology and chronic disease companies driving consistent returns.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Nearly half of all women\u2019s health startup exits occurred in just the past five years, with 27 companies achieving billion-dollar valuations<\/a>, none in our region.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Beyond reproductive health, conditions that disproportionately affect women,\u00a0like autoimmune disease<\/a> and Alzheimer\u2019s (where two-thirds of patients are women)<\/a> or impact women differently than men like cardiovascular disease and hormonal health \u2014 represent massive underserved markets where Philadelphia could lead.<\/p>\n

Philadelphia excels at exactly the kind of innovation that drives women\u2019s health value creation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

We\u2019re not starting from scratch. We\u2019re sitting on underutilized assets that are competitive advantages.<\/p>\n

Prove value and untapped potential<\/p>\n

The women\u2019s health diagnostics category has proven its value. Companies like Cytyc (acquired for $6.2 billion<\/a>) and Genomic Health (acquired for $2.8 billion<\/a>) demonstrate billion-dollar exit potential. Philadelphia has world-class capabilities in precision medicine and genomics through institutions like Penn Medicine<\/a> and Jefferson.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The opportunity is channeling these strengths toward building women\u2019s health companies here.<\/p>\n

Our pharmaceutical infrastructure also remains world-class. GSK, Johnson and Johnson and Eli Lilly\u2019s expanding presence<\/a> have created deep expertise in drug development and potential strategic acquirers and partners.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Our universities produce exceptional talent<\/a>. Our health systems run thousands of clinical trials annually<\/a>, providing validation pathways that women\u2019s health companies need and gateways to US markets.<\/a> And unlike Boston or New York, Philadelphia\u2019s lower operating costs could allow women\u2019s health startups to stretch capital further \u2014 an advantage in a sector already known for strong capital efficiency<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The pieces exist. What\u2019s missing is intentional coordination of our ecosystem.<\/p>\n

What it would take to compete<\/p>\n

Establishing Philadelphia as a women\u2019s health innovation hub will require collaboration across our ecosystem. Here\u2019s how different stakeholders could contribute.<\/p>\n

Health systems and universities could explore dedicated women\u2019s health innovation tracks within existing programs. Organizations like Penn Center for Innovation<\/a> and Jefferson\u2019s innovation programs<\/a> are well-positioned to create women\u2019s health-specific cohorts, providing companies with clinical validation pathways and partnership opportunities.<\/p>\n

Investors could develop explicit women\u2019s health investment strategies instead of treating the category as opportunistic. Local investors like Robin Hood Ventures<\/a> and Ben Franklin Technology Partners<\/a> would strengthen our ecosystem\u2019s ability to nurture women\u2019s health companies from early stages through exit.<\/p>\n

Economic development organizations could actively position Philadelphia as a destination for women\u2019s health companies. The local Chambers of Commerce, Select Greater Philadelphia<\/a>, Life Sciences PA and others could highlight our unique advantages \u2014 lower costs, clinical partnerships, and proximity to pharmaceutical acquirers \u2014 in their recruitment efforts.<\/p>\n

Entrepreneurs building in women\u2019s health might find that Philadelphia offers distinct advantages: lower operating costs, faster access to clinical partners, a collaborative ecosystem and strategic acquirers within a 30-minute radius. Resources like the Science Center\u2019s Capital Readiness Program<\/a> provide infrastructure to support growth.<\/p>\n

Policymakers could explore how to support women\u2019s health innovation through strategic initiatives<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Philadelphia created women\u2019s health history in 1850. Investing in it now builds stronger communities and economies.\u00a0<\/p>\n

We pioneered women\u2019s medicine once.
