\u2018Bodies and Souls\u2019 and the art of \u2018passionate figuration\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cThis collection shows a real personal view of what art since the 1970s has been in the United States,\u201d said Robert Cozzolino, curator of \u201cBodies and Souls.\u201d.<\/p>\n
In the mid-1970s, Robert E. Kohler and his wife, Frances Coulborn, visited an art gallery in Boston and saw Jane Lund\u2019s \u201cParty for Myself,\u201d which features four women seated around a table. All of them resemble the artist and depict particular aspects of herself.<\/p>\n
One woman is naked, one wears a party hat, one wears a floral dress with flowers in her hair and the fourth has a grotesquely distorted face. The scene is cast in a blueish haze. One figure is turned to face the viewer with an unsettling grin.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe saw this \u2014 I can still see it over a doorway \u2014 and we said, \u2018Ugh!\u2019\u201d Robert told WHYY News. \u201cWe just hated it. We both agreed this is terrible stuff. Why would anybody want to put this on the wall?\u201d<\/p>\n
But on the way back home to Philadelphia, they could not shake the image.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe got in the car and drove down and Frances said, \u2018You know?\u2019 And I said, \u2018Yeah, I do,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cIt turns out that what we were feeling was not with strong hatred, but strong love.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cParty for Myself\u201d was the couple\u2019s first foray into art collecting.
