Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro argued on Sunday that the\u00a0Democratic Party\u2019s issues<\/a> go far deeper than mere surface-level rhetoric, suggesting the party has been long overdue for an internal reckoning.<\/p>\n

Shapiro<\/a> spoke with podcast host Sam Fragoso of the \u201cTalk Easy\u201d podcast about what it means to govern one of the most prominent swing states at a time when the Democratic Party is trying to discern where to go following\u00a0this moment of uncertainty<\/a>\u00a0under President Donald Trump<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Shapiro pushed back multiple times against the host when he suggested that the Democrats have a\u00a0\u201cmessaging\u201d problem<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would respectfully disagree with you. I think it\u2019s less about messaging and\u00a0more about doing,\u201d\u00a0Shapiro replied. <\/p>\n

He argued that merely passing legislation is only the first step, which must be followed by sending out the money to actually make initiatives happen. <\/p>\n

Only then should it be followed by praising it as an accomplishment.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cToo often times we never got to that second step of driving the money out or making the policy change, so people could see something different in their lives,\u201d he argued.<\/p>\n

Fragoso went on to cite a new NBC poll, where he noted, \u201cThe only topics that were less popular than AI were the Democratic Party and\u00a0Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIs that right?\u201d Shapiro asked. \u201cI didn\u2019t see the poll.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fragoso went on to note that in the decade he\u2019s hosted the show, he has never before seen such anxiety about the state of the middle class and widespread distrust of institutions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Shapiro replied that his whole reason for being involved in politics is because he believes that things actually can get better, but at the same time, he has seen how institutions have failed Americans.<\/p>\n

When asked how he thinks the Democratic Party<\/a> has failed, he replied, \u201cI think we have failed to deliver tangible results for people. Let me explain further. I think for too many parents, they feel like their kids\u2019 school hasn\u2019t gotten better over generations.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn Pennsylvania<\/a>, we\u2019ve increased our investment by 30% in public education,\u201d he said, touting his own state. \u201cTest scores are up, graduation rates are up, truancy is down, the number of teachers is rising.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think too often times people see violence in their communities and don\u2019t believe government gives a damn about solving it. We\u2019ve driven down the level of crime across Pennsylvania.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think too many people grow up in neighborhoods that they love, but they feel like they\u2019re not going to be able to get a job there, and so they leave,\u201d he said, citing another issue. <\/p>\n

\u201cPennsylvania, we\u2019ve got the only growing economy in the Northeast. We\u2019re creating more jobs than all but three other states.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThose are tangible things that people see in their lives getting better,\u201d he concluded. \u201cThat\u2019s what we need to be for.\u201d<\/p>\n

But as he is but one leader in the Democratic Party, he went on to argue that it, as an institution, is due for a reckoning, claiming the last time it had such an internal battle was the election of President Bill Clinton<\/a> in 1992. <\/p>\n

The other successful Democratic presidents, by contrast, were exceptional cases.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Former President Barack Obama<\/a>, he said, was a figure who managed to unite the country, and former President Joe Biden was merely a panicked escape from then-President Donald Trump. <\/p>\n

Neither of those, he argued, were times when the Democrats had an internal discussion hashing out what the party is actually about in the same way as former President Bill Clinton\u2019s election in 1992.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut again, not taking anything away from President Biden<\/a>, that was not a big ideological battle. We need to have that. And so, here\u2019s what I can tell you with absolute certainty,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m going to be part of that.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Pennsylvania Gov.
