{"id":147557,"date":"2026-03-25T02:05:14","date_gmt":"2026-03-25T02:05:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/147557\/"},"modified":"2026-03-25T02:05:14","modified_gmt":"2026-03-25T02:05:14","slug":"pittsburgh-city-council-considering-legislation-banning-cooperation-with-ice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/147557\/","title":{"rendered":"Pittsburgh City Council considering legislation banning cooperation with ICE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">PITTSBURGH \u2014 The Pittsburgh City Council is considering legislation to ban cooperation with federal immigration operations. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">This comes after some high-profile arrests in the city and a debate over the role of city police officers in all of this. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">The mayor has said Pittsburgh police officers will not assist federal ICE agents, but some council members say they want to make that, along with some other spoken policies, crystal clear. To do this, they introduced legislation to put it all in the books. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve seen across the country and here in Pittsburgh, just really shocking behavior by ICE officers,\u201d Council member Barb Warwick said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">Council member Warwick, along with Deb Gross and Erika Strassburger, are sponsoring the bill that designates city-owned properties like parks and rec centers as safe community places. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">ICE agents would be banned from all nonpublic areas in those safe places. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">We want to make sure every resident who lives in the city of Pittsburgh feels safe,\u201d Warwick said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">While the mayor has made it clear that Pittsburgh police won\u2019t assist with ICE operations, the legislation also prohibits the city from entering immigration enforcement agreements with the federal government. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">We have met with the chief.
