Pittsburgh Coastal Energy, a startup co-founded by two Swanson School of Engineering students, took home the top prize in the student startup category at the 18th annual South by Southwest Pitch Event. The team, which largely consists of Pitt students and alumni, pitched a concept to power underwater vehicles with ocean waves.<\/p>\n
The startup is led by CEO Priscilla Prem, a PhD student in chemical engineering who invented the company\u2019s core technology, the Polar Ionic Nanogenerator, as well as Bobby Karnavas (ENGR \u201925), who leads mechanical design as chief technology officer.<\/p>\n
Other Pitt people on the Pittsburgh Coastal Energy team include: Operations Manager Theresa Baughman (A&S \u201915), Principal Chemical Engineer Rob Hacku (ENGR \u201923G), Director of Strategic Partnerships Steve Conover (A&S \u201914) and R&D Electrical Engineer Joaquin Tristan, a senior in the Swanson School.<\/p>\n
