{"id":149977,"date":"2026-03-27T11:51:06","date_gmt":"2026-03-27T11:51:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/149977\/"},"modified":"2026-03-27T11:51:06","modified_gmt":"2026-03-27T11:51:06","slug":"forecasters-extend-flood-warning-for-pittsburgh-area-power-outages-affecting-thousands-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/149977\/","title":{"rendered":"Forecasters extend flood warning for Pittsburgh area; power outages affecting thousands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National Weather Service has extended a flood warning until 10:30 a.m. Friday in the aftermath of overnight thunderstorms.<\/p>\n<p>Between flashes of lightning and wind gusts reaching nearly 50 mph Thursday night, the Pittsburgh area collected between 1.25 and 2.25 inches of rain, said Bill Modzelewski, meteorologist for the NWS\u2019s Pittsburgh office in Moon.<\/p>\n<p>The flood warning, issued around 2 a.m. Friday, was initially expected to last until 7:15 a.m. That was extended by about three hours, as rain is forecast to continue during Pittsburghers\u2019 morning commutes.<\/p>\n<p>Rainfall is expected until about 8 a.m., Modzelewski said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn general, really any low spot or poor drainage area or any roads close to creeks, those areas could see some flooding,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Following Thursday night\u2019s high winds, about 2,600 Allegheny County households were without power as of 7 a.m. Friday morning, according to Duquesne Light Co.<\/p>\n<p>West Penn Power\u2019s outage map only listed 169 Westmoreland County customers and 13 Allegheny County customers without power as of 7 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>Minor flooding has been reported at Pine Creek in Etna and the Point in Downtown Pittsburgh, Modzelewski said.<\/p>\n<p>River levels around the Point \u2014 which usually measure between 16 and 17 feet \u2014 are forecast to rise above 18 feet Friday, he said. This is about 4 inches shy of flood stage, which refers to a rise in water level that begins to create a hazard for people or property.<\/p>\n<p>A water level above 18 inches is still high enough to close the Monongahela Wharf parking lot, Modzelewski said. However, the wharf lot was still open as of 6:30 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>Jacks Run also has overflown near Lynch Field in Greensburg, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/1460470969043706\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">social media post by Greensburg Public <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/1460470969043706\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Works<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Pittsburgh area is slated for a respite from severe weather this weekend, Modzelewski said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis weekend looks like it should be fairly quiet,\u201d he said. \u201cMostly sunny on Saturday, a few more clouds on Sunday.
