SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE\/WYOU) \u2014 Gov. Josh Shapiro announced Thursday<\/a> the Electric City will be one of three host sites for World Cup watch parties this summer, also known as FIFA Fan Zones.<\/p>\n

At home, Lackawanna County\u2019s Visitors Bureau was already planning marketing efforts to bring people to Scranton.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing equidistant from Philadelphia where Philadelphia 26 will be hosting the fourth of July game and the other knockout games. Then when the semifinals and finals happen in the Meadowlands. So, we were already looking to market and attract folks to come in,\u201d Executive Director Curt Camoni said.<\/p>\n

Aidan Laghaeian is an avid soccer fan in Scranton. He says he was shocked and excited to hear the city was selected as a Fan Zone location.<\/p>\n

Gov Shapiro announces free World Cup Fan Zones in PA <\/a><\/p>\n

We live in such a diverse, multicultural environment that we have people from everywhere. It\u2019s just fun to get them all excited to get them together for the world cup,\u201d Laghaeian said.<\/p>\n

The fan zone will take place over two weekends in July, July 4-6 and July 18-19.<\/p>\n

Those five days are expected to be a major economic boost for local businesses, with visitors getting a taste of what Scranton has to offer.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ll find nothing but welcoming people. we have great hospitality across the board with all our partners. I\u2019m really excited to give them an opportunity to showcase what they do to a larger audience,\u201d Camoni said.<\/p>\n

An estimated $700 million will be generated in the Commonwealth during the World Cup.<\/p>\n

The Visitors Bureau does say there will also be plenty of interactive activities for people of all ages.<\/p>\n
