EDGEWOOD, Pa. \u2014 Questions remain after a shootout in broad daylight at Edgewood Towne Center on Thursday. <\/p>\n
PREVIOUS COVERAGE >>> Person injured in exchange of gunfire at Edgewood Towne Center<\/a><\/p>\n Allegheny County police have taken over the investigation, but we\u2019ve learned from Edgewood\u2019s police chief that the shooting happened on the very first day the department launched its bike patrol.<\/p>\n PHOTOS: Police investigate exchange of gunfire at Edgewood Towne Center<\/a><\/p>\n An increase in patrols: that\u2019s what shoppers will continue to see when they visit Edgewood Town Center.<\/p>\n \u201cI do want to let people know Edgewood Town Center is safe. We are up there,\u201d said Chief Sylvan Altieri. \u201cWhen you have \u2013 this is my opinion \u2013 two people that have access to handguns and poor coping skills, those are very difficult situations to predict.\u201d<\/p>\n Altieri was bike patrolling the area right before the shooting. He said Edgewood Town Center has become the main focus of his department.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s not because the town center is a bad place. It\u2019s a retail place. Any city you go to \u2013 when you see retail theft, it\u2019s going to be somewhere where there is a large congregation,\u201d Altieri said.<\/p>\n We\u2019ve seen a shootout here before. In April 2023, bullets hit a school bus and several other cars in the town center lot. <\/p>\n Last summer, a man chased a woman with a knife as she was waiting to go to an appointment. <\/p>\n PREVIOUS COVERAGE >>> Man accused of chasing woman with knife in Edgewood; local group calls for more charges<\/a><\/p>\n Altieri acknowledged the previous violence and said it\u2019s unfortunate that this most recent shooting happened the same day his department launched its bike patrol program. It\u2019s just one of the measures he\u2019s implemented since taking over as chief in January, along with mandatory business checks.<\/p>\n \u201cEach shift, they\u2019re making it a point to get out of the vehicle, go in, and talk to the business owners. It\u2019s important that we do that. We need to be visible, and that\u2019s what we\u2019re doing,\u201d Altieri said.<\/p>\n We\u2019re still working to learn the names of those involved in the shootout. Allegheny County police detectives said they are both accounted for but have not released names.
