In 1995, a group of Erie County senior citizens wanted one place to call when an older adult had a question, problem or concern.<\/p>\n
\u201cJane Lucal, a probate court judge, retired NASA Director Ray Koch, and his wife, Marian, shared this vision, which was born in December 1996,\u201d said Sue Daugherty, executive director of Serving Our Seniors.<\/p>\n
Serving Our Seniors is a charitable, nonprofit that is funded by Erie County taxpayers, Daugherty said.<\/p>\n

\u201cServing Our Seniors was established to help older adults solve problems that jeopardize their ability to maintain their health and to function independently,\u201d she said. \u201cWe don\u2019t solve their problems for them; the problems are solved with them.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey have to do their part, and Serving Our Seniors works to accomplish what they can\u2019t do alone. Our slogan is \u2018Your Partner and Advocate When You Need Help.’\u201d<\/p>\n
Programs and services that Serving Our Seniors offers include free Medicare counseling, free help for older grandparents raising grandchildren, free Matter of Balance, which is a training course to improve balance and prevent falling.<\/p>\n
Other programs include the free Diabetes Empowerment Education Program, free General Problem Solving and free Advocacy, where an advocate will come to your home to resolve questions, problems or concerns.<\/p>\n
There are rural home delivered meals at the cost of an anonymous donation, weekday transportation which costs $1.50 for a one-way trip, though those who qualify can receive a 50 cent trip<\/p>\n
The following programs are available on a cost-sharing basis: small home repairs; housekeeping; ramp installation; help to afford medications; and help to afford general dental care.<\/p>\n
Serving Our Senior\u2019s Board of Directors serve on a voluntary basis, representing various geographic areas within Erie County.<\/p>\n
