A replacement for a 70-year-old Delaware River bridge <\/a>that links the New Jersey and Pennsylvania Turnpikes received a $600 million boost from the federal government.<\/p>\n

U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, D-NJ, and Pennsylvania senators announced the federal grant late Sunday on X. The proposed bridge would replace the existing span that was closed for several months in 2017 after cracks were found in a piece of steel and repaired.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis upgrade will boost throughput for nearly 70,000 cars a day, give commuters a safer, more reliable ride, speed up shipping, and strengthen the regional economy for everyone who depends on this interstate corridor,\u201d Booker said.<\/p>\n

The money will be used toward construction costs, New Jersey Turnpike Authority officials said in a statement. The funds are from the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law\u2019s Bridge Investment Program.<\/p>\n

The new bridge will be jointly funded by the New Jersey and Pennsylvania Turnpike authorities.<\/p>\n

In October, officials from both authorities announced that two of nine alternatives were selected <\/a>by engineers for further study. They are building twin replacement bridges north of the existing bridge between Florence, N.J., and Bristol, Pa., or constructing a single replacement span in two phases.<\/p>\n

The project is in preliminary engineering and permitting, authority officials said Monday. The alternatives are being considered during preliminary engineering, and no decision has been made on the structure type, officials said.<\/p>\n

The bridge, which links the New Jersey Turnpike\u2019s Pearl Harbor extension and the Pennsylvania Turnpike is identical to the span that carried the New Jersey Turnpike over Newark Bay, which is also being replaced.<\/p>\n

The new bridge would either be twin spans or a single bridge totaling six lanes with shoulders. The current bridge has four lanes in both directions.<\/p>\n

Rehabilitation of the current bridge was ruled out after it was deemed to be at the end of its useful service life.<\/p>\n

Final design of a replacement span will start in 2028 based on Federal Highway Administration approval of the winning new bridge alternative.<\/p>\n

Construction could start in 2031.<\/p>\n
