The plan sets out specific ways to improve maternity care before, during, and after pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>Multiple department secretaries announced the plan at a press conference this morning.<\/p>\n<p>Data from 2021 shows there were 32 deaths for every 100,000 live births in Pennsylvania. More specifically, non hispanic white women had 28 deaths for every 100,000 live births while black women had 60 deaths for every 100,000 live births.<\/p>\n<p>Behavioral health, cardiac and coronary conditions, and hemorrhage were the three top causes for deaths that year.<\/p>\n<p>This new action plan lays out five first year goals for improving maternal health in the state. These range from better mental health service to strategy for rural maternal health care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe plan includes funding to stand up things like telehealth enabled vans, so that we can bring care to where people are. Transportation is one of the biggest barriers for folks in our rural communities,\u201d said Dr. Val Arkoosh, secretary of the Department of Human Services.<\/p>\n<p>Pennsylvania has invested millions into maternal health research and education over the past three years. This strategy relies on existing program funds and structures, while also pushing for funding in broader healthcare areas in need.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Pennsylvania published a new maternal health strategic action plan today.
