A new concert series intended to boost Philadelphia’s nightlife scene kicks off this week with shows at 13 bars, restaurants and hotels.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Weeknights Live is an expansion of the Tuesday Nights Live program the city’s Department of Commerce tested between October and January. That program\u00a0supported live performances in the lobbies of six Center City<\/a> hotels for 16 weeks, city officials said. All told, 135 artists performed.\u00a0<\/p>\n MORE:\u00a0City launches app, grant program and business guide to help navigate events around 250th anniversary<\/a><\/p>\n Now, Weeknights Live includes free performances by local artists from 6-9 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays in East Passyunk<\/a>, Center City and West Philly<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n The program is rolling out\u00a0as the city gears up for a particularly busy tourist season highlighted by the World Cup, MLB All-Star Game and the city’s semiquincentennial celebrations. Last week, Gov. Josh Shapiro<\/a> signed a bill that\u00a0allows Philadelphia bars to\u00a0stay open until 4 a.m.<\/a>\u00a0during a 40-day stretch this summer.<\/p>\n Philadelphia’s nighttime economy produces $26.1 billion annually, according to a commerce department\u00a0report<\/a>\u00a0from last June. But Mondays through Wednesdays are the least busy. On average, those days only bring out 115,000 to 134,000 people each night.<\/p>\n “By showcasing live performances at participating businesses, we support artists’ livelihoods and strengthen neighborhood economic vitality,” Mayor Cherelle Parker<\/a> said in a statement. “With the expanded program, we deliver creativity and opportunity, bringing people, organizations and businesses together for shared success.”<\/p>\n Where are the shows happening?\u00a0<\/p>\n On Mondays, four bars in East Passyunk will host performances:<\/p>\n \u2022 Pistolas del Sur, 1934 E. Passyunk Ave. \nOn Wednesdays, four West Philly restaurants will host performances:\u00a0<\/p>\n \u2022 Carbon Copy, 701 S. 50th St. The businesses are subject to change, city officials said. Updates will be posted on Weeknights Live\u00a0website<\/a>.<\/p>\n The commerce department did not immediately respond to request for comments about the program’s costs. The city has said it will offer performers “fair pay.”<\/p>\n \nPerformers and businesses that are interested in participating in the program can email<\/a> a program representative.
