{"id":154724,"date":"2026-04-01T21:45:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-01T21:45:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/154724\/"},"modified":"2026-04-01T21:45:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-01T21:45:08","slug":"septa-buys-coach-cars-from-canada-to-boost-regional-rail-service-nbc10-philadelphia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/154724\/","title":{"rendered":"SEPTA buys coach cars from Canada to boost Regional Rail service \u2013 NBC10 Philadelphia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In an effort to boost Regional Rail service, SEPTA has purchased two dozen rail cars from Canada.<\/p>\n<p>The transit agency announced in a news release that they have purchased 24 rail cars from Exo, which operates public transportation in the Greater Montr\u00e9al area.<\/p>\n<p>Officials said that Exo had formally approved SEPTA\u2019s $8.58 million bid for the coach cars at its March board meeting. Funding for the purchase comes from nearly $220 million in additional capital dollars allocated by Gov. Josh Shapiro back in November.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are grateful for Gov. Shapiro\u2019s continued support of SEPTA, and we are committed to continuing to deliver improvements for our customers,\u201d said General Manager Scott A. Sauer. \u201cThese additional rail cars will help us enhance reliability and expand capacity for our customers while we work toward replacing our aging Regional Rail fleet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The transit agency shared that they had been in contact with other agencies across North America about potential railcar purchases after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcphiladelphia.com\/news\/local\/septa-to-complete-final-silverliner-iv-inspection-on-day-of-deadline\/4302342\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FRA-mandated inspections and repairs of its Silverliner IV fleet<br \/>this past fall<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>SEPTA said the Silverliner IVs make up two-thirds of the Regional Rail fleet, and large portions had to be removed from service while this work was performed causing trip cancellations and reduced capacity for months.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Copy-of-1200-x-675-Template-20.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   alt=\" \"\/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Copy-of-1200-x-675-Template-21.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   alt=\" \"\/><\/p>\n<p>While repairs are ongoing for most Silverliner IVs, SEPTA has moved forward with finding replacement rail cars. Earlier this year, \u00a0the agency leased <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcphiladelphia.com\/news\/local\/septa-rolls-out-leased-railcars-to-ease-regional-rail-overcrowding\/4343553\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">10 rail cars from the Maryland Area Rail Commuter (MARC) system<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The rail cars purchased from Exo will operate with SEPTA\u2019s existing fleet of ACS-64 electric locomotives. <\/p>\n<p>At this time, SEPTA is currently working out a plan for transporting the passenger rail cars from Montr\u00e9al. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"In an effort to boost Regional Rail service, SEPTA has purchased two dozen rail cars from Canada.
