It\u2019s been quite a day for Konnor Griffin, who will make his debut for the Pittsburgh Pirates<\/a> on Friday\u2019s home opener against the Baltimore Orioles at PNC Park. But the good news doesn\u2019t stop there.<\/p>\n The Pirates are working to finalize a nine-year, $140 million contract with the consensus top prospect in baseball, according to ESPN\u2019s Buster Olney<\/a>.<\/p>\n The reported extension will not only be the largest contract in team history, surpassing the eight-year, $106.75 million deal signed by Bryan Reynolds three years ago, but is also the largest guarantee for a player yet to make his MLB debut \u2014 or for a player this early into his career if finalized after Friday\u2019s game. <\/p>\n If anyone is worthy of receiving that level of commitment, it\u2019s Griffin. The 2024 ninth-overall pick soared up the system during his first professional season in 2025 and combined to hit .333\/.415\/.527 with 23 doubles, four triples, 21 home runs, 94 RBI and 65 stolen bases in 122 games across three levels all while winning a minor league Gold Glove as a shortstop. <\/p>\n Griffin hit just .171 during spring training but hit four home runs before he was sent to Triple-A Indianapolis to begin the season. In five games with the Indians, Griffin went 7 for 16 (.438) with a .571 on-base percentage, a 1.196 OPS, three doubles, one RBI, four runs and three stolen bases. <\/p>\n Though the deal is not yet finalized, assuming it kicks in this year, Griffin will be under club control through the 2034 season, when he will still be just 28 years old. The commitment from the Pirates offers Griffin long-term financial security with the ability to cash in again as a free agent still in his prime. <\/p>\n One thing to keep in mind is that if the deal is signed and becomes official before Griffin debuts on Friday, the Pirates will not be eligible to receive a PPI draft pick<\/a>.<\/p>\n But regardless of when the deal is signed and what the final details are, the Pirates will have a potential star manning shortstop for the long haul. <\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMentioned in this article: Konnor Griffin<\/a> Pittsburgh Pirates<\/a> <\/p>\n
