The new contract for workers represented by TWU includes a wage increase and &#8220;other complimentary benefits.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As part of the agreement, union members will &#8220;contribute more toward their health benefits compared to the previous deal.&#8221; Officials say the contract &#8220;reflects fair wages and benefits and job security&#8221; to employees while also &#8220;providing long-term relief for taxpayers related to post-retirement benefits.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It takes effect beginning Jan. 1 and runs to Dec. 31, 2027.<\/p>\n<p>The union representing municipal workers in Upper Darby unanimously voted to authorize a strike Monday, saying the township&#8217;s contract proposal includes &#8220;unreasonable demands.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Transport Workers Union Local 234 represents 115 employees who handle garbage collection, snow removal, street maintenance and animal control services. Their current contract expires Dec. 31.<\/p>\n<p>MORE:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillyvoice.com\/mike-schmidt-delaware-county-home-sold-documentary\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Phillies legend Mike Schmidt&#8217;s former Delco home sells for $3 million<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The strike authorization vote allows union leaders to initiate a work stoppage at any time after the contract expires.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Upper Darby administrators have dragged their heels and have not negotiated a contract for our members in good faith,&#8221; TWU Local 234 President Brian Pollitt said in a statement. &#8220;Their contract demands are outrageous and would harm both workers and residents. We are sounding the alarm.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Union leaders said they attempted to initiate contract negotiations in May, but that the township &#8220;stalled&#8221; until November.
