BETHLEHEM, Pa. – On April 6th, 1984, 42 years ago today, Lehigh University Professor Terry Hart blasted into space.<\/p>\n
He spent a week there as part of the Challenger mission, repairing a satellite.<\/p>\n
Hart says the mission the Artemis II crew faces is quite different with health risks for the astronauts.<\/p>\n
“I remember the first day, I woke up my space shuttle flight, I woke up, \u2018Whose hands are those in front of me?\u2019 Because it doesn’t feel like your hands are up there, you know.” Hart said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“The first thing you notice when you’re weightless is the fluids in your legs that are pulled down by gravity during the day, that comes up to your head, and you feel the first day like you have a head cold. And then people that know the astronauts say which, either face is awful puffy, their faces become puffy, and that’s those fluids coming up.” Hart recalled.<\/p>\n
Hart, who told us in 2019 during the 50th Anniversary of the Lunar landing that NASA still has big plans for the Moon, says in space, the sense of smell and taste buds are diminished too.\u00a0However,\u00a0for the Artemis II crew, now in deep space, that could be the least of their health concerns.<\/p>\n
“If you’re in the space station and you’re or the space shuttle, for example, lower Earth orbit, you’re protected by the Earth’s magnetic field, the Van Allen radiation belt, and all protects you from a lot of that stuff coming from the sun. Once you get more than a couple 1,000 miles away from the Earth, though, you’re not protected anymore.” Hart explained.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Hart says that radiation from the Sun won’t make astronauts sick right away, but NASA is concerned for longer missions, likes to Mars, radiation could lead to health impacts later in life.<\/p>\n
“This group is susceptible to that right now?” 69 News reporter Bo Koltnow asked.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“They are, yeah, they are.
