{"id":159186,"date":"2026-04-07T06:19:35","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T06:19:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/159186\/"},"modified":"2026-04-07T06:19:35","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T06:19:35","slug":"3-pittsburgh-officers-honored-over-police-radio-17-years-after-being-killed-on-duty-wpxi-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/159186\/","title":{"rendered":"3 Pittsburgh officers honored over police radio 17 years after being killed on duty \u2013 WPXI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">PITTSBURGH \u2014 Saturday marked 17 years since three Pittsburgh Bureau of Police officers were killed in the line of duty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">In a social media post Saturday, the bureau honored officers Eric Kelly, Stephen Mayhle and Paul Sciullo, who lost their lives in \u201cthe worst attack on law enforcement in Pittsburgh\u2019s history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">The three officers were ambushed by an armed man while responding to a domestic violence call in Stanton Heights on April 4, 2009.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">Three other officers responding to the scene were injured.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpxi.com\/news\/poplawski-found-guilty-on-3-counts-of-1st-degree-m\/201528955\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Richard Poplawski<\/a> was convicted of three counts of first-degree murder in 2011 and was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpxi.com\/news\/cop-killer-richard-poplawski-sentenced-to-death\/201530870\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sentenced to death<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">A memorial to the fallen officers stands at the Zone 5 police station.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">Pittsburgh Police Chief Jason Lando had the following message broadcast over police radio channels on Saturday:<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">\u201cAttention all units:<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">\u201cToday, April 4th, 2026, we pause to remember and honor three heroes who gave their lives in the line of duty on this date in 2009.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">\u201cPittsburgh Police Officers Eric Kelly, Stephen Mayhle, and Officer Paul Sciullo made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting and serving the residents of the City of Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">\u201cOn this 17th anniversary of their tragic passing, we remember their courage, their dedication, and their unwavering commitment to duty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">\u201cThese three officers stood together and fell together. And their sacrifice will never be forgotten.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">\u201cWe ask all units on the channel to please take a moment of silence in their honor.
