Bethlehem has reached a major milestone in its plans to open a new community center in South Bethlehem<\/a>, selecting two nonprofits to handle the center\u2019s day-to-day operations and lead fundraising for its construction.<\/p>\n

In a news release, Bethlehem announced that River Crossing YMCA and United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley will partner with the city to bring the new community center to the city.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe United Way and YMCA are some of the Lehigh Valley\u2019s most trusted institutions, known for advancing the health, education, and well-being of individuals and families,\u201d said Bethlehem Mayor J. William Reynolds in the release. \u201cThey have proven track records for building collaborations that strengthen neighborhoods and build welcoming third spaces.\u201d<\/p>\n

The city issued a request for proposals for an operator and fundraising partner for the community center in September, and selected the YMCA and United Way because the \u201cpartnership between two of the Lehigh Valley\u2019s most trusted institutions proved to be a natural fit,\u201d according to the news release.<\/p>\n

South Bethlehem has lacked a dedicated public recreational space since the Boys and Girls Club closed in 2017. City officials announced plans for a center in 2022, and presented detailed plans in early 2025 based on feedback from residents.<\/p>\n

The city has identified a parking lot on Mechanic Street, which is owned by Bethlehem Parking Authority, as the \u201cpreferred location\u201d for the new community center, which will be built from the ground up.<\/p>\n

According to the news release, \u201cincome will present no barrier for seniors seeking community, youth playing basketball and nonprofits meeting local needs.\u201d<\/p>\n

The city, YMCA and United Way will work together over the next several months to finalize the center\u2019s design and fundraise for its construction and long-term future.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are confident that, under our joint leadership, the center will become a vibrant hub of opportunity \u2014 supporting youth development, family engagement and equitable access to wellness resources for all residents.\u201d said Marci Lesko, president and CEO of United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley, in the release.<\/p>\n
