Fresh off their historic national championship victory in Indianapolis, the Gannon University men\u2019s basketball team is expected to arrive back in Erie at roughly 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The community is invited to welcome the Golden Knights home at Highmark Events Center, with doors opening at 4 p.m. The university plans to hold a short program, offer fans the chance to take photos with the team, and provide a close-up look at the championship trophy.<\/p>\n
University leaders say the celebration will continue well beyond the team\u2019s arrival, with plans to share the moment across campus and throughout the Erie community.<\/p>\n
For many who made the trip to Indianapolis, the championship moment is one they\u2019ll never forget.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was like a once-in-a-lifetime thing, just seeing the community come together,\u201d said Gannon senior Madeline Emerson, who followed the team from the Elite Eight through the Final Four and into the title game. \u201cIt felt like we were at home, looking up in the stands and seeing all the maroon and gold.\u201d<\/p>\n

Madeline convinced her mom to come with to the championship game on Easter Sunday.<\/p>\n
Emerson was one of only a handful of students who traveled to support the team, surrounded by alumni and lifelong fans who filled each arena with hometown energy.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou looked out at those stands here in Indy, and you would have thought we were at a home game,\u201d said Meghan Morphy, Gannon\u2019s director of athletics.<\/p>\n

When the final buzzer sounded, Emerson said the emotion of the moment finally hit her.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne night I was crying like a baby,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s just such a special place to me. Their win is well deserved. They\u2019ve worked so hard this whole season.\u201d<\/p>\n
For the program, the championship represents years of growth.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I came here as a freshman, we only won three games out of 35,\u201d said senior Kaif Syed. \u201cAnd now we\u2019re national champions. It\u2019s exciting to see the growth of Gannon\u2019s basketball.\u201d<\/p>\n
