ALLENTOWN, Pa. (WFMZ) \u2014 Wildfires broke out all across wooded areas in New Jersey last year and we’re already a couple of weeks into New Jersey’s wildfire season this year.<\/p>\n
Following a cold, dry winter and continuing drought, springtime in the Garden state is the worst time of year for wildfires. Officials are anticipating another active year.<\/p>\n
“Spring also brings longer days, lower humidity, gusty winds\u2014the perfect conditions for rapid fire spread. In fact, fires can ignite just hours after rainfall,” said Chief Bill Donnelly, NJ Firewarden.<\/p>\n
The lack of moisture and need for a slow, soaking rain doesn’t help.<\/p>\n
“What’s happening just under the surface has some bearing on how dry it is right on top,” said John Cecil, DEP State Parks, Forests, and Historic Sites Assistant Commissioner.<\/p>\n
To prepare, the Department of Environmental Protection secured $90,000 in grants for 22 communities most at risk.<\/p>\n
“Creating and maintaining fire breaks, conducting strategic forest thinnings and mowings, home hardening and defensible space,” stated Greg McLaughlin, DEP Administrator.<\/p>\n
Last year alone, 27,229.25 acres burned in fires. One of those wildfires was right in Hackettstown along Route 46 last May.<\/p>\n
“While fire activity so far has been low this year compared to years in the past, New Jersey’s residents should not let their guard down. It doesn’t take long for a fire this time of year to get up and start running. Clean your gutters, maintain defensible space around your home and make sure driveways are accessible for emergency vehicles,” Donnelly concluded.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"ALLENTOWN, Pa.
