{"id":160396,"date":"2026-04-08T12:34:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-08T12:34:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/160396\/"},"modified":"2026-04-08T12:34:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T12:34:07","slug":"sgb-provides-updates-on-student-trustee-initiative-will-attempt-to-cooperate-with-governor-shapiro","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/160396\/","title":{"rendered":"SGB provides updates on student trustee initiative, will attempt to cooperate with Governor Shapiro"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Student Government Board provided updates on its proposed student trustee initiative and expressed concern about recent bus route changes at its weekly meeting Tuesday night at Nordy\u2019s Place.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>President Marley Pinsky and board member Evan Levasseur announced they met with David Brown, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.government.pitt.edu\/people\/david-brown\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">vice chancellor of government relations and advocacy,<\/a> about moving forward with its<a href=\"https:\/\/www.utimes.pitt.edu\/news\/sgb-proposes-adding#:~:text=By%20SUSAN%20JONES,talked%20about%20in%20the%20meetings.\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> initiative for a student trustee member<\/a>. Pinsky said SGB and Brown discussed cooperating with Governor Josh Shapiro and the state government to push for this initiative.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn order to amend the results of the <a href=\"https:\/\/pittnews.com\/article\/201056\/news\/levasseur-and-gupta-elected-sgb-president-and-vp-referendums-pass-in-annual-election\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">previous referendum question<\/a> from our last election to establish a voting student trustee on the board of trustees we are going through the governor route,\u201d Pinsky said. \u201cIf we wanted a student trustee we could go to the state government to try and request them to nominate a student. The fastest way to get to the next step would be potentially going to the governor.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Board member Andrew Elliott expressed concerns over the speed of <a href=\"https:\/\/engage.rideprt.org\/buslineredesign\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">changing PRT bus routes<\/a> on campus .\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bus schedule is <a href=\"https:\/\/engage.rideprt.org\/buslineredesign\/BLR-RegionMaps#top#jl_magic_tabs_oakland_routes_gix2\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">changing<\/a> with increased speed and with less transparency than, frankly, ever before,\u201d Elliott said. \u201cIt appears that the route in front of towers is no longer in service and now the route in front of the William Pitt Union is back in service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elliott was concerned over how the route change was dealt with in terms of notifying students and residents in Oakland.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was literally overnight that the schedule was changed, and there was no documentation that I could find posted anywhere on campus about these changes,\u201d Elliott said. \u201cI truly hope that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pittsburghpa.gov\/City-Government\/The-City-Council\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">city council <\/a>decides to inform its residents better and with more care and planning.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Elliott said he believes the change is unhelpful to Pitt students and Pittsburgh residents when navigating their daily schedules.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is disappointing that the City is not considering the lives and routines of students on campus, as well as one of its largest bus routes in the City, and these frequent changes in service of creating new infrastructure is increasingly problematic for students to plan their lives and their days around this transport,\u201d Elliott said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Board member Kylie Baker said SGB\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DWwYDvlDV-Q\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rapid response training program<\/a> in partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/frontlinedignity.org\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Frontline Dignity<\/a> is happening tomorrow at 7 p.m. in room 324 in the Cathedral of Learning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome learn from Frontline Dignity on how to be a good and safe legal observer and protect our community from ICE,\u201d Baker said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Baker also provided updates to its <a href=\"https:\/\/pittnews.com\/article\/200890\/news\/sgb-addresses-winter-weather-policy-student-activity-fund-and-ice-related-ens-alerts-at-weekly-meeting\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">proposed prayer room<\/a> in the Hillman Library.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is going to be on the ground floor, and it\u2019s going to be split into half meditation space \u2014 half prayer rooms so people can observe any kind of prayer with a lot of dignity and privacy,\u201d Baker said. \u201cAll we are waiting on now is a budgetary and administrative approval.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Budgets:\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/experience.pitt.edu\/podc\/home\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Outdoors Club<\/a> made 27 requests totaling $20,472.32 for its fall budget. The board amended and approved these requests to $24,238.88.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/experience.pitt.edu\/h4h\/home\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Habitat for Humanity<\/a> made two requests totaling $26,408.50 for its fall budget. The board amended and approved these requests to $23,848.69.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/experience.pitt.edu\/womenicehockey\/home\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Women\u2019s Ice Hockey<\/a> requested $12,500 for its fall budget. The board deferred this request.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/experience.pitt.edu\/crew\/home\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pitt Rowing Club<\/a> requested $11,043.20 for its fall budget. The board approved this request in full.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Allocations:\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/experience.pitt.edu\/menasa\/home\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Middle Eastern North African Student Association<\/a> requested $5,360.32 for an on-campus program. The board amended and approved this request to $5,207.02.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/casaatpitt\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chinese American Student Association<\/a> requested $10,000.00 for an on-campus program. The board approved this request in full.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/experience.pitt.edu\/dem\/home\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Delta Epsilon Mu<\/a> requested $5,115.00 for general funds.
