{"id":160506,"date":"2026-04-08T15:13:21","date_gmt":"2026-04-08T15:13:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/160506\/"},"modified":"2026-04-08T15:13:21","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T15:13:21","slug":"erie-council-selects-new-planning-commissioners-incumbent-not-reappointed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/160506\/","title":{"rendered":"Erie council selects new planning commissioners, incumbent not reappointed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Erie Town Council appointed three new members to the town\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.erieco.gov\/193\/Planning-Commission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Planning Commission<\/a> during a <a href=\"https:\/\/erie.legistar.com\/Calendar.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">special meeting April 7<\/a>, selecting a slate of candidates that did not include current commissioner <a href=\"https:\/\/erie.legistar.com\/View.ashx?M=F&amp;ID=15366702&amp;GUID=532BE673-A677-4177-A49A-B72A3CB74D10\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tim Burns.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>Council voted to appoint Alex Schatz, Sherri Booth and Paul Leath to fill three open seats following a round of candidate interviews conducted during the meeting.\n<\/p>\n<p>Burns, who has served on the Planning Commission for four years and reapplied for another term, was among five finalists interviewed but was not selected as part of the final vote.\n<\/p>\n<p>The appointments came after council reviewed a pool of 11 applicants, later narrowed to six and ultimately five candidates who participated in interviews during the meeting.\n<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the vote, council members briefly discussed the strength of the applicant pool.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we had some quality candidates that presented here,\u201d councilmember Hoback said, thanking residents for applying and participating in the process.\n<\/p>\n<p>During his interview, Burns emphasized continuity and ongoing work tied to the town\u2019s comprehensive plan, which was adopted in 2024. He pointed to the commission\u2019s role in shaping long-term growth and said he was interested in continuing efforts to align development regulations with the plan.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that we have done some pretty good work here,\u201d Burns said. \u201cI still think that there\u2019s more to be done.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Burns also highlighted the need to revisit and refine elements of the comprehensive plan over time, describing it as a \u201cdynamic document\u201d that should evolve alongside the town\u2019s growth.\n<\/p>\n<p>Other candidates brought a range of professional backgrounds, including planning, engineering, finance and land use law, and spoke about priorities such as infrastructure capacity, affordable housing, and managing future development.\n<\/p>\n<p>Schatz, a landscape architect and attorney, said he was motivated to apply after becoming more engaged in local land use decisions and emphasized the importance of strengthening the public record in planning cases.\n<\/p>\n<p>Booth, a retired planner, said she hoped to contribute her experience while becoming more involved in the community, while Leath pointed to continued implementation of the comprehensive plan and alignment with development code updates as key priorities.\n<\/p>\n<p>The Planning Commission serves as an advisory body to the Town Council on land use and development matters, including reviewing site plans, rezonings and updates to the town\u2019s Unified Development Code.\n<\/p>\n<p>Following interviews, council members cast paper ballots selecting their top three candidates.
