RICHMOND TWP., Pa. – A Berks County battery-maker is growing its Texas workforce.<\/p>\n
East Penn Manufacturing has announced plans to expand its facility in Temple, Texas.<\/p>\n
The company, which is based in Richmond Twp., already employs about 350 people at its Temple site.<\/p>\n
With the 175,000 square-foot expansion, the company is expected to add 48 full-time jobs there.<\/p>\n
The project is expected to break ground in June, with a targeted completion in fall 2028.<\/p>\n
The Temple facility plays a key role in East Penn’s AGM battery manufacturing process, the company said. Batteries manufactured in Pennsylvania are shipped to Temple for finishing before being distributed across North America.<\/p>\n
The Texas expansion will increase finishing capacity by at least three million AGM SLI batteries annually, East Penn said.<\/p>\n
Founded in 1946, East Penn Manufacturing, which is best known for its DEKA brand batteries, operates a 520-acre battery manufacturing facility in Richmond Twp. It also has a wire, cable, and accessories division.<\/p>\n
According to its website, East Penn’s distribution network is comprised of nearly 90 warehouse and distribution locations across the U.S. and Canada. That includes what it calls its “central hub” at 50 Jefferson Street in Topton.<\/p>\n
Grand opening for Maidencreek site<\/p>\n
This Friday, the company will hold a grand opening ceremony for a new distribution center in Maidencreek Twp., Berks County, a spokesperson told 69 News.<\/p>\n
As we reported last year, East Penn is leasing the 930,000 square-foot building off of Route 222 and Evansville Road.<\/p>\n
The company previously told us it planned to use the building for warehousing and distribution, enabling it to consolidate some of its current distribution center operations within Berks County and the Lehigh Valley.<\/p>\n
East Penn also has a warehouse at 8742 Congdon Hills Road in Lower Macungie Township, which is known as the Alburtis site.<\/p>\n
