They can grow in forests, too. <\/p>\n<p>Coville: \u201cThere\u2019s log-grown mushrooms, like shiitake mushrooms grown outdoors. There\u2019s ginseng and ramps, which are becoming increasingly popular \u2026 you know, locally grown chestnuts or American persimmons, which is a really lovely crop you don\u2019t often see in grocery stores. Pawpaws are getting increasingly popular.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robbie Coville is with Pennsylvania\u2019s Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Bureau of Forestry.<\/p>\n<p>He says developing markets for forest food crops can provide landowners with new income streams and a financial reason to protect their forested land. <\/p>\n<p>That benefits the climate because forests absorb and store carbon dioxide. And they provide local cooling.<\/p>\n<p>But building and sustaining markets for forest-grown products takes work. And Coville says government funding can help create momentum.<\/p>\n<p>For example, in Pennsylvania, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pa.gov\/agencies\/pda\/newsroom\/shapiro-admin-announces--21m-to-strengthen-food-supply-chain----\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a state grant<\/a> helped a collective of more than 50 nut growers invest in nut hullers, mills, and oil pressers to increase production of hickory nut oil.<\/p>\n<p>Coville: \u201cWhich is said by some to be an olive oil of the hardwood forests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So it\u2019s an example of how governments can help grow these emerging industries \u2013 and in the process, support local businesses, healthy forests, and the climate.<\/p>\n<p>Reporting credit: Sarah Kennedy \/ ChavoBart Digital Media.
