A convenience store chain frequented by Joe Biden and beloved for its loaded sandwiches, burgers and hearty breakfast treats <\/a>is set to expand its fan base.<\/p>\n

Sheetz, which launched in Pennsylvania<\/a> in 1952, is planning a major expansion with 100 new locations across the Midwest, as part of a $1 billion investment.<\/p>\n

The company is focusing heavily on Indiana, following in the footsteps of rival Wawa.<\/a> Its first outpost in the state is expected to open in 2027, with specific locations and timelines to be announced as development progresses.<\/p>\n

‘Over the past several years, we have received a significant number of inquiries from Indiana residents who want to see Sheetz in their communities,’ said president and CEO Travis Sheetz.<\/p>\n

‘This momentum has been reinforced by the enthusiastic response to our unique offerings in new Midwest markets.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘It is an exciting time for Sheetz, and we look forward to giving customers everything they need in one stop, creating quality jobs and being a positive force in the Indiana communities we serve.’<\/p>\n

Since opening its first Ohio store nearly 30 years ago, Sheetz has steadily built a presence across the Midwest.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The chain has added more than 25 locations in western Ohio in recent years, including in the Dayton and Toledo areas.<\/p>\n

In 2024, the retailer entered Michigan and expects to operate nearly 20 stores in the state by the end of 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Currently, it operates over 830 convenience store locations across seven states: Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, Maryland and Michigan.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Later this year, Sheetz will also open a new state-of-the-art food preparation and distribution center in Findlay, Ohio, to support its growing Midwest footprint.<\/p>\n

Sheetz operates as a hybrid between a convenience store, fast-food restaurant and fuel stop, with most locations paired with large gas stations and designed for quick, 24\/7 service.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It has built a loyal following thanks to its made-to-order menu, particularly its customizable ‘MTO’ sandwiches, breakfast burritos and its cult-favorite ‘Shmuffins’ – breakfast sandwiches served on English muffins.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The chain is also known for its extensive drink selection, including milkshakes, cold brew coffee and self-serve soda stations.<\/p>\n

Its approach has drawn comparisons to Buc-ee’s, <\/a>another cult-favorite chain that has redefined the gas station experience.\u00a0<\/p>\n

While both brands have expanded the traditional model into destination-style stops with high-quality food and strong customer loyalty, Buc-ee’s is known for its travel centers and massive fuel forecourts.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sheetz, by contrast, focuses more on speed and round-the-clock accessibility, geared toward everyday convenience rather than long-haul travel.\u00a0<\/p>\n

News of Sheetz’s expansion comes as competition heats up across the grocery and convenience sector.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trader Joe’s, for example, is continuing its own growth push, with plans to open new locations across multiple states as it capitalizes on demand for lower-cost, private-label groceries.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The cult-favorite chain, founded in 1967, is planning to open more than 20 new stores in 2026 – including at least 17 already confirmed across 12 states.\u00a0<\/p>\n

New locations are set to land in cities including Paso Robles and Anaheim Hills in California, Spokane Valley and Seattle in Washington, Oswego in Illinois, West Orange in New Jersey, Lafayette in Louisiana and Herriman in Utah.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The grocer has already opened two stores in 2026 – one in Miller Place, New York<\/a>, and another in Hamden, Connecticut.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trader Joe’s added 34 locations in 2024 and a further 43 in 2025<\/a>, taking its nationwide footprint to more than 600 stores across 43 states.\u00a0<\/p>\n
