Thousands of individually packaged bags of fentanyl were found in the woods in New Castle County, Delaware, police said Monday.<\/p>\n

The drugs were found off of Miles Road in Claymont by a child and a young adult who were walking near the Radnor Green neighborhood on Sunday, April 12. New Castle County Police said they found two grocery bags containing large packages, or “bricks,” and told a family member who then contacted officers.<\/p>\n

“I have not seen this amount just randomly located in the woods,” New Castle County Police Master Cpl. Richard Chambers said. “The kids were out playing is what they were. They were exploring in the woods, speaking to their father. They were out just exploring the woods on a beautiful Sunday, and they stumbled upon a grocery bag.”<\/p>\n

“The one girl decided \u2014 she saw it and believed it to be narcotics,” Chambers added, “in which she went to report it to a family member, who came out and looked at it, and said he believed that was heroin at the time.”<\/p>\n

Police went to the area to pick up the bags, and testing confirmed that the substance inside the small bags was fentanyl.<\/p>\n

“It’s in everybody’s neighborhood, and this is a classic example,” Chambers said. “No matter what neighborhood you live in, there’s addiction.”<\/p>\n

In total, 14,088 individual bags of fentanyl were packaged into the two bricks, police said.<\/p>\n

“One grain of salt, the size of the salt, can kill multiple people of fentanyl,” Chambers said. “Fortunately, these kids didn’t open it up and get it into their skin, have skin contact or inhale it because it could have, it could have killed somebody.”<\/p>\n

“If you happen to be missing a significant quantity of fentanyl or have any information about who it may belong to, please contact the New Castle County Division of Police at 302-573-2800 or dial 911 in an emergency,” the department said.<\/p>\n

“While we certainly are not expecting anyone to step forward to claim it, we always welcome any information that can help us keep our community safe.”<\/p>\n
