{"id":164958,"date":"2026-04-13T23:58:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-13T23:58:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/164958\/"},"modified":"2026-04-13T23:58:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-13T23:58:08","slug":"uber-launches-campaign-against-phillys-1-rideshare-tax","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/164958\/","title":{"rendered":"Uber launches campaign against Philly\u2019s $1 rideshare tax"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From Philly and the Pa. suburbs to South Jersey and Delaware, what would you like WHYY News to cover? <a href=\"#Section1\">Let us know!<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>Uber has launched a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cRagfxve25A\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">six-figure advertising campaign<\/a> criticizing Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/rideshare-tax-philadelphia-uber-lyft\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">proposed $1-per-ride tax on rideshares<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>The ad campaign calls on Philadelphians to voice opposition to the tax, saying it would affect citizens facing a high cost of living, as well as senior citizens and people with mobility issues.\n<\/p>\n<p>Uber\u2019s app began displaying a message last week saying, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uber.com\/us\/en\/blog\/philadelphia-rider-information\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Learn more<\/a> about Mayor Parker\u2019s proposed tax that will make your trips more expensive.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p>Uber said in a statement that the campaign is focused on correcting a misconception among the Parker administration about who uses rideshare in Philadelphia.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur efforts are focused on amplifying the voices of the hundreds of thousands of weekly riders who use Uber to get to work, medical care, and school, and the more than 30,000 drivers who depend on the platform, ensuring policymakers understand the real-world consequences of this proposal,\u201d an Uber spokesperson said in an emailed statement.\n<\/p>\n<p>The proposed tax would benefit the School District of Philadelphia, which is facing a $300 million budget deficit.
