KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (WAVY) \u2014 A Pennsylvania man fell asleep while driving and struck a traffic signal pole and a \u201cWelcome to Kill Devil Hills\u201d sign in an overnight crash on U.S. 158, according to police.<\/p>\n

Officers responded to South Croatan Highway near the intersection of Eighth Street in reference to a single-vehicle collision at approximately 12:55 a.m. Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Police said a 2017 Dodge Ram 3500, operated by a 51-year-old man, was traveling southbound on U.S. 158 when the driver reportedly fell asleep.<\/p>\n

The vehicle crossed over the northbound lanes of travel, struck the curb and collided with a traffic signal pole, a wooden utility pole and the \u201cWelcome to Kill Devil Hills\u201d sign.<\/p>\n

The impact caused the traffic signal pole to fall into the roadway. Barricades and traffic cones were placed on East and West Eighth Street, restricting traffic to right turns only onto U.S. 158.<\/p>\n

The driver and the 59-year-old passenger were taken to Outer Banks Health Hospital were taken to Outer Banks Health Hospital in Nags Head for treatment. The driver was subsequently airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for further medical care.<\/p>\n

Police said impairment is not believed to be a factor in the crash.<\/p>\n
