EASTON, Pa. – A new affordable housing project in Northampton County is making moves.<\/p>\n
Ground has been broken on Shiloh Estates II in Southside Easton.<\/p>\n
The sun is beaming down on the 100 block of Phillips Street, right around where Easton Mayor Sal Panto grew up.<\/p>\n
“None of these houses were here when I was a kid,” said Panto.<\/p>\n
The future is bright for the new project, planned near where Panto says core memories were made.<\/p>\n
“They’re going to do it up here on an empty lot that my grandfather had a garden in,” Panto said.<\/p>\n
Eight affordable homes are set to undergo construction and be slapped with a “for sale” sign to first time home buyers.<\/p>\n
“You can change not only the family but generations,” said Phillip Davis, CEO of the Greater Community Development Corporation.<\/p>\n
Davis says all participating households will fall within the low to moderate income category.<\/p>\n
“The first four will be for people who make up to 100% average median income. Then, the second four will be for those that are 50% of average median income and below,” said Davis.<\/p>\n
The second phase of Shiloh Estates has been a work in progress for the last six years.<\/p>\n
“The funding came together in an interesting way. There was no sewer line in the street. [The city of Easton] invested up to about $150,000 to put the sewer line in. Then we went to Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA), and we got funded, $200,000 to acquire the project,” said Davis. “It’s a number of private and public partnerships, and then the neighborhood partnership program. It’s stacked and it’s layered. But it took all of those partners to really bring this project together.”<\/p>\n
Davis says the Greater Community Development Corporation, public officials, the Easton Area Chamber of Commerce, partner of the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce and other partners have been persistent and buyers are already in the application process.<\/p>\n
“This is a vision that we’ve been working on with our tremendous and amazing staff. It’s expensive to build homes and you can’t keep them affordable if you don’t have the necessary support,” said Davis.<\/p>\n
Davis says the goal is to have the first units built by November 2026 and the final four homes to be built by mid-to-late 2027.<\/p>\n
“We’re waiting on the permits from the city right now, and they’ll start moving earth probably within the next two weeks,” said Davis. “I can’t wait until the homes go up.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"EASTON, Pa. – A new affordable housing project in Northampton County is making moves.
