THIS IS BLACK MATERNAL HEALTH WEEK IN THE PENNSYLVANIA BLACK MATERNAL HEALTH CAUCUS IS HOLDING EVENTS TO CALL FOR WHAT IT SAYS NEEDS TO BE DONE TO HAVE EQUITY IN BLACK MATERNAL HEALTH. THIS AFTERNOON, THERE WAS A HOUSE MAJORITY POLICY COMMITTEE HEARING. THE PENNSYLVANIA BLACK MATERNAL HEALTH CAUCUS SAYS THE UNITED STATES CONTINUES TO FACE RACIAL DISPARITIES IN MATERNAL HEALTH OUTCOMES, WITH BLACK WOMEN EXPERIENCING HIGHER RATES OF MATERNAL MORBIDITY, MORTALITY, AND MORBIDITY. MERCEDES WELLS OF ILLINOIS TESTIFIED WHEN GIVING BIRTH TO HER FOURTH CHILD THAT EVEN THOUGH SHE WAS IN THE HOSPITAL FOR SIX HOURS AND WAS IN LABOR AND HER WATER BROKEN, THE DOCTOR NEVER CAME TO SEE HER AND SHE WAS DISCHARGED FROM THE HOSPITAL. SHE GAVE BIRTH ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. MINUTES AFTER LEAVING THE HOSPITAL. MY STORY IS NOT JUST ABOUT ONE HOSPITAL OR ONE MOMENT. IT REPRESENTS A LARGER ISSUE THAT MANY BLACK WOMEN ACROSS THIS COUNTRY FACE NOT BEING BELIEVED, NOT BEING HEARD AND NOT RECEIVING TIMELY CARE. WHEN WE KNOW SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH OUR BODIES BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER LABOR. Discharged while in laborWells shared that, despite being in labor and having her water break, her doctor never came to see her, and she was discharged from the hospital. She gave birth on the side of the road minutes after leaving the hospital.
