BRECKNOCK TWP., Pa. \u2014 Fire crews moving fast, as flames break out in Brecknock Township.<\/p>\n
This happening just before 1:40 this afternoon in the 400 block of Maple Grove Road.<\/p>\n
Preliminary reports indicate a shed caught fire with winds helping it spread to nearby brush.<\/p>\n
\u201cSomeone was on the property; the homeowner knew he was cutting wood. A spark from the chainsaw hit the woods and burned approximately a half an acre,\u201d said Chief Joel Lutz of the Brecknock Township Fire Company.<\/p>\n
A large response, with multiple fire companies from across the area rushing to the scene.<\/p>\n
\u201cI believe the fire was under control in 45 minutes, but then after, all the trees had to come down. Everything was taken care of and completely extinguished. We\u2019re probably looking almost two hours we were on the scene for,\u201d Lutz explained.<\/p>\n
Around the same time, another fire in Richmond Township, crews there working to put out hot spots in a field.<\/p>\n
All of this as temperatures climb into the upper 80s and near record highs for this time of year.<\/p>\n
\u2028Add in dry conditions, low humidity, and gusty winds, and fire officials say the risk goes up quickly.<\/p>\n
This time of year, brush fires are not uncommon, and days like this make them more dangerous.<\/p>\n
Officials are urging people to be careful, avoid burning outdoors, properly dispose of cigarettes, and be mindful of anything that could spark a fire.<\/p>\n
