Post-Gazette will continue publishing after asset sale to nonprofit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette announced Tuesday morning that it was acquired by a nonprofit and will no longer shut down in May.<\/p>\n<p>Block Communications, Inc., which has owned the Post-Gazette for nearly a century, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.post-gazette.com\/local\/city\/2026\/04\/14\/post-gazette-venetoulis-institute-baltimore-banner\/stories\/209901010002\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">selling<\/a> the paper to the <a href=\"https:\/\/venetoulisinstitute.org\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Venetoulis Institute for Local Journalism<\/a>, publisher of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebanner.com\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Baltimore Banner.<\/a> The sale is effective May 4, the day after the Post-Gazette was scheduled to cease publication.<\/p>\n<p>Near the start of 2026, Block Communications announced they were shutting down two of their subsidiaries \u2014 the Post-Gazette and Pittsburgh City Paper \u2014 following a <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/newspapers-closing-media-industry-report-traffic-b0a3a14510ffe104da836d46432c2678\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">national trend<\/a> of newspaper closures.<\/p>\n<p>In response, members of the Newspaper Guild of Pittsburgh, local community representatives and labor leaders <a href=\"https:\/\/pittnews.com\/article\/200312\/featured\/journalists-launch-grassroots-newspaper-alliance-after-post-gazette-announces-closure\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> the creation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ourpapernow.org\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pittsburgh Alliance for People-Empowered Reporting<\/a>, a coalition with the goals of researching media alternatives to the Post-Gazette and highlighting underrepresented local communities.<\/p>\n<p>On March 19, Pittsburgh City Paper <a href=\"https:\/\/pittnews.com\/article\/201359\/news\/pittsburgh-city-paper-relaunch-signals-hope-for-local-journalism-amid-uncertainty\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> that it had been purchased by <a href=\"https:\/\/localmatterstk.org\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LocalMatters<\/a>, a new nonprofit dedicated to ensuring the long-term sustainability of local newspapers, and would resume publication after shutting down in December.<\/p>\n<p>In a press release from the News Guild, Andrew Goldstein, president of the News Guild of Pittsburgh, said the Post-Gazette staying open is \u201ca win for Pittsburgh.\u201d Stewart Bainum Jr., founder of the Venetoulis Institute, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.post-gazette.com\/local\/city\/2026\/04\/14\/post-gazette-venetoulis-institute-baltimore-banner\/stories\/209901010002\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">indicated<\/a> that the Post-Gazette newsroom would need to be smaller moving forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe community has made it clear over the past several months that it wants a newspaper that serves the needs of the people,\u201d Goldstein said in the press release. \u201cThat requires a robust staff that has the freedom to pursue the truth under dignified working
