ALLENTOWN, Pa. (WFMZ) \u2014 It’s been a little more than a month since officials broke ground on Allentown’s newest affordable housing complex.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, 69 News got a behind-the-scenes look at the construction of Walnut Square Apartments at 40 S. 8th Street.<\/p>\n
The 38-unit complex is solely for affordable housing.<\/p>\n
The $17 million Walnut Square Apartments project, by Cortex Residential, is primarily funded by the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program along with county and city funds from the American Rescue Plan.<\/p>\n
“We helped secure $14 million, $1.4 million for 10 years, for this project in Low-Income Housing Tax Credits,” said State Sen. Nick Miller of Pa.’s 14th District.<\/p>\n
Those making between $14,000 a year and $42,000 a year, with an approved application, would be eligible to live at the complex. The building will have three 2-bedroom apartments, six 3-bedroom apartments and 29 1-bedroom apartments.<\/p>\n
“We focus solely on the acquisition, preservation and now new development of affordable housing. I think the residents and the future residents that live here are going to be really proud to be a part of this community,” said Jonathan Strauss of Cortex Residential.<\/p>\n
Applications for Walnut Square are expected to launch mid to late summer with folks moving in by October.<\/p>\n
“We know the challenges with housing affordability not just in Allentown but across the Lehigh Valley and the emphasis on seniors and families and being able to deliver units so quickly.
