BERN TWP., Pa. \u2013 The warden at the Berks County Jail in Bern Township is stepping down.<\/p>\n
Jeffrey Smith is moving to Lehigh County to be closer to home.<\/p>\n
He\u2019s been with the Berks County Jail system for nearly 20 years, working his way up from a corrections officer.<\/p>\n
He\u2019s seen the jail through a number of changes and implemented some reforms, including a program that ensures everyone leaves the jail with a form of identification.<\/p>\n
“They didn’t have an active driver\u2019s license and that was necessary for almost everything they did,\u201d said Berks County Board of Commissioners Chair Christian Leinbach. \u201cAnd that’s something that now is a program that’s in place in large part because of his leadership.”<\/p>\n
Leinbach said Smith is leaving the jail in good hands.
