I\u2019m telling you it\u2019s inaccurate. Those are not the facts.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Parker made references to the rhetoric used in several in-app <a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uber.com\/us\/en\/blog\/philadelphia-rider-information\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">notices<\/a> and <a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cRagfxve25A\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">videos<\/a>\u00a0Uber released in opposition to the tax. The company has claimed the proposal will disproportionately impact seniors and people in underserved areas, and it estimated that drivers&#8217; earnings would decrease by around 4.5%.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Parker has said tech companies like Uber and Lyft can foot the bill, but both transportation services have remained steadfast that riders will be responsible for the charge.\u00a0Uber also said that since it&#8217;s already beholden to a Transportation Network Company (TNC) fee that pays 1.4% of all fares to the Philadelphia Parking Authority, the plan effectively taxes riders twice.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe Philadelphia TNC Assessment Fee and an alert that reads \u201cLearn more about Mayor Parker\u2019s proposed tax that will make your trips more expensive\u201d are highlighted on Uber receipts. The company has spent six-figures on ads to blast Parker&#8217;s plan, <a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/uber-ad-campaign-philadelphia-rideshare-tax\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WHYY<\/a> reported.\n<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"richtext-image full-width\" data-original=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Uber_screenshot_2.width-704.png\" width=\"704\" height=\"454\" alt=\"Uber screenshot\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"richtext-image full-width\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Uber_screenshot_2.width-704.png\" width=\"704\" height=\"454\" alt=\"Uber screenshot\"\/>Molly McVety\/for PhillyVoice<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-image-caption\">Uber has begun displaying in-app notices alerting users to a rideshare tax proposed by Mayor Cherelle Parker.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cEverywhere in the world, rideshare taxes are consumer taxes paid by riders \u2014 raising prices, reducing demand, and ultimately lowering driver earnings,\u201d Jazmin Kay, public affairs associate at Uber, said in a statement Wednesday. \u201cIn a moment of real affordability strain, adding a new $1 fee on top of the existing 1.4% rideshare fee creates a regressive double tax that will limit access to work, school, and essential services even as thousands of jurisdictions across the country choose not to tax rideshare at all.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Parker pushed back on Uber\u2019s implications that Philadelphia is one of a limited number of governments that regulate rideshare services.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cWhen you read the ads and listen to what you hear on different platforms, you would think that the city of Philadelphia is the first in the entire nation to propose a rideshare tax,\u201d she said. \u201cSan Francisco, the home of Uber and Lyft, has a rideshare tax. \u2026We\u2019re in local government. Our job is to do the best we can with the limited resources that we have.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAs part of Parker\u2019s $6.97 billion budget proposal, <a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.phillyvoice.com\/philadelphia-school-district-funding-rideshare-tax\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the rideshare tax <\/a>is estimated to generate around $48 million per year. Those funds would be used to cut into the School District of Philadelphia\u2019s $300 million budget deficit.<\/p>\n<p>While initially saying the tax would help prevent some layoffs of classroom jobs, Parker on Wednesday said\u00a0the city\u2019s finance team was able to \u201cmake adjustments\u201d to allow for every school-based position to be retained using revenue from the plan.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cThat is tremendous news, I believe, for our children, their parents, for every teacher and all of our school district employees,\u201d she said. \u201cThat is something for us to be proud of \u2026 if we can actually make it a reality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Disclosure: Uber is an active PhillyVoice advertiser.
