Jomo, the 30-year-old male eastern black rhinoceros, was euthanized on Thursday. The Pittsburgh Zoo said Jomo, one of the four eldest rhinoceros males in North America, had been receiving treatments for several age-related conditions but had declined in the last week. He was the zoo&#8217;s last remaining rhinoceros.\u201cI\u2019m honored that Jomo has been a part of my life since the day he arrived,\u201d said Assistant Curator of Mammals Karen Vacco. \u201cI will miss giving him back rubs until he fell asleep and the baby soft spot behind his ears. He will be missed by so many.\u201dJomo arrived in Pittsburgh in 1996 after being hand raised following his birth at the San Diego Zoo in 1995. Since coming to the Steel City, he sired two daughters, Janine in 2012 and Kesi in 2017. Janine gave birth to Jomo&#8217;s grandson Tamu in 2023.Jomo spent most of his final months inside his barn. It was a place Zoo staff said he felt most comfortable. Jomo was 30 years old at the time of his death, exceeding the median life expectancy for a black rhinoceros, which is 20.2 years, according to the Association of Zoos &amp; Aquariums.   \u201cJomo was one of the nicest animals in the Zoo,\u201d said Vice President of Living Collections Dr. Chris Bonar. \u201cIn fact, he was one of the nicest animals that I ever met.
