HARRISBURG, DAUPHIN CO. (WOLF) \u2014 Pennsylvania transportation officials say dozens of new initiatives are helping improve safety, reduce costs, and modernize infrastructure across the state.<\/p>\n
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation released its latest \u201cFocus on Innovations\u201d report, outlining more than 30 projects and strategies introduced or continued over the past year.<\/p>\n
State leaders say the efforts are part of a broader push under Governor Josh Shapiro\u2019s administration to create a more efficient and reliable transportation system.<\/p>\n
\u201cStaying at the forefront of new technology and best practices to keep travelers safe and lower costs is a critical component of everything we do,\u201d PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll said.<\/p>\n
Among the initiatives highlighted in the report are new methods aimed at extending the life of roadways, which officials say could reduce potholes and cut down on repair costs over time.<\/p>\n
PennDOT is also expanding the use of digital tools, including paperless design systems and 3D modeling, to speed up project planning and construction.<\/p>\n
Safety improvements are another focus, with the agency testing new barrier systems, enhanced lighting, and smart message boards designed to better protect both road crews and drivers.<\/p>\n
The report also points to larger infrastructure efforts, including a proposed rail connection between Scranton and New York City, which officials say could boost economic growth in northeastern Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n
In addition, the state continues to invest in electric vehicle infrastructure, with more than $170 million dedicated to expanding charging stations across Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n
