ALBURTIS, Pa. \u2014 With above average temperatures this week, it’s the perfect time to get out to the garden. Tuesday, April 14 is National Gardening Day.<\/p>\n
Maureen Kospia is one of the owners of Kospia Farms, a 26-acre farm and nursery in Longswamp Township, Berks County.<\/p>\n
“People are just jonesing for flowers. I think everybody needs sunshine and flowers and color,” Kospia told 69 News.<\/p>\n
If you’re eager for blooms, Kospia says to keep an eye on the forecast each day to get the most out of them.<\/p>\n
“I would say, put it out, plant it and if we have one of those weird evenings, you’re going to want to cover it up or put it in. The same with the hanging baskets. Herbs and veggies, we have cool crop veggies that are definitely okay to plant. We’re not going to promote tomatoes and peppers and things like that yet until we have another week or so there,” Kospia explained.<\/p>\n
If you’re interested in perennials, now’s the time to plant them while the weather is still on the milder side.<\/p>\n
“If we’re talking perennials and trees for your garden, get them in the ground,” Kospia stated.<\/p>\n
Annual flowers thrive in warmer weather.<\/p>\n
“Like a petunia or calibrachoa, I would not leave that out if the temperature drops,” Kospia said.<\/p>\n
Gardners Dessa and Jan are eager to get planting.<\/p>\n
“It’s been such a cold winter so we’re just anxious to get things in the garden,” said Dessa McCormick as she and friend Jan filled their trunk.<\/p>\n
With a little help from Kospia’s four-legged furry mascot, Kraken, they found all that they needed to get digging.<\/p>\n
