A Pennsylvania House committee has approved a bill that would set a new maximum speed limit for dirt and gravel roads across the commonwealth.<\/p>\n
House Bill 2274, which was reported out of the Committee on Transportation with amendments, proposes a statutory speed limit of 35 mph for unpaved surfaces. Under current state law, these roads often default to a 55 mph limit unless otherwise posted by local authorities.<\/p>\n
The legislation, introduced by Representative Christina Sappey and several co-sponsors, would add a specific 35 mph category for any road classified as dirt or gravel.<\/p>\n
The bill includes requirements for how the new limit must be communicated to drivers. The 35 mph limit will not be effective unless it is posted. Signs must be placed at the beginning and the end of each speed zone, and additional signs must be posted at intervals of no more than one-half mile.<\/p>\n
State regulations adopted by the Department of Transportation would oversee the installation of these devices.<\/p>\n
If the full General Assembly passes the measure and it is signed into law, the act would take effect 60 days later. The proposal comes as part of the 2026 legislative session.
