PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) \u2014 The warning period is over. Now, drivers who zip through these five Philadelphia school zones will have to pay up.<\/p>\n
The speed cameras<\/a>, which look like refrigerator-sized boxes, are placed at Sayre High School and School of the Future in West Philadelphia, and Stetson Middle School, KIPP North Philadelphia Charter and Widener Memorial in North Philadelphia. <\/p>\n The cameras are switched on when the lights are flashing before the start and at the end of each school day. Drivers caught going at least 11 miles over the speed limit will now face fines starting at $100. <\/p>\n The Philadelphia Parking Authority<\/a> said the five locations that were selected are \u201chigh-priority zones,\u201d where there were 10 fatal or serious-injury crashes and 25 pedestrian crashes between 2019 and 2023.<\/p>\n The PPA hopes the cameras and fines will get people to slow down, and students, crossing guards, staffers and residents will be safer. <\/p>\n Fines have already been in effect for speeding drivers along Roosevelt Boulevard<\/a> and Broad Street<\/a>.
